Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions and Report of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom, 1919, Vol. 37 This neglect Of modern vernacular poetry is not confined to Europe. In India itself, some people are accustomed to think that classical poetry is the only poetry worth cultivating. Whereas there are many translations and adaptations Of the Older dramas, many editions and commentaries on the Old devotional poetry and the Old philosophical books of India, there are very few translations, even from one Indian vernacular into another, Of the modern products Of the Indian mind. The vernacular literatures have not yet found their fitting place in the centres Of learning. There are scarcely any vernacular libraries, if we mean by a library not a haphazard collection Of books, but an organised unit housed with loving care, catalogued for the benefit Of students and of learned men and women, near and far, and endowed with a life and growing activity Of which we can be proud. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom, Vol. 18 AT the opening of our session, when we are at a time when 500 years ago the father Of English poetry composed' some, at least, if not the most celebrated of his works, I have thought we might have a little conversation upon the subject of poetry generally. I should have, perhaps, suggested that we might speak Of our meeting as a symposium, but I fear it lacks the essential element which makes that designation appropriate. Now I do not propose to detain you by discussing what poetry is. The courtesy of one of our members, whom I take this opportunity Of thanking, has enabled me to see how this matter has been treated before in this Society, though I was not aware that the ground had been occupied when I undertook to read a paper upon the subject but having had the advantage of reading Mr. Washington Moon's paper, I do not think that our lines cross each other, for I see that the greater part of his paper is original poetry Of his own, and I certainly cannot emulate him in that respect in anything I shall say to night. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom, 1903, Vol. 24 My range to-night extends over wider limits both of time and space, and, so far as is possible in one paper, I shall endeavour to do something more than merely touch the fringe of a vast subject. It is my purpose to co-ordinate its various branches, and from customs surviving in a mutilated and half-hearted fashion, more particularly within our own Islands, to deduce the origin and meaning of Tree-worship in the past. The subject is one which touches both anthropology and folklore, and in both these aspects it is worthy of consideration by the members of a learned Society such as this. Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Society of Literature of the United Kingdom, Vol. 1 The adjudication of these marks of distinction His Majesty has vested in the Council of the Society. In the year 1825, His Majesty was pleased to confirm and perpetuate the Society by the grant of a Royal Charter; and in furtherance of his royal intentions, a piece of ground, near the church of St. Martin in the Fields, has been assigned, as the site of a hall, library, and other offices for the use of the Society: a contribution has since been made by several mem bers of the Society towards defraying the expense of erecting the buildings. A statement of the objects of the Society, its powers and privileges, together with its laws and regulations, and a copy of the Charter, will be found in the following pages.
