Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings, 1902, Vol. 33 In studying the resemblances between Greek plays wc have to observe, besides the more general and comprehensive resemblances of plots, as in the Choephoroe and the Electros, certain other kinds of similarity of less extent and compass. These may be grouped under three heads: (1) resemblances of motives, (2) resemblances of scenic situations, (3) verbal parallels. Of these it appears that the first and third have received more attention from students of the Greek drama than has the second, though it is impossible to deal adequately with resemblances of motives without taking account incidentally of resemblances of scenic situations. In his excellent Schlofscenen auf der attischen Biihne {Rhein. Mus. 46 [1891], pp. 25-46) Dr. Dieterich has dealt with both the latter and the former and has considered verbal parallels as well. As a further example of the way in which the several sorts of resemblances arc bound up together, and also of the way in which they may be complicated besides by derivation from several sources in the same passage, I may cite here the opening of the Philoctetes. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions, 1912, Vol. 33 AM one Of those who have for many years watched with keen interest all movements having for their Object the improvement Of health and of health conditions. I have tried to understand them and the facts upon which they were based, and to keep in touch with developments as they arose. We have arrived at a point when no one would care to deny that the good health Of the people should be one of the most important Objects Of good government, whether national or local. It is also fully realised (to quote the words Of the majority report Of the Poor Law Commission) that to the extent to which we can eliminate or diminish sickness among the poor, we shall eliminate or diminish one half the existing amount Of pauperism; words not very different, however, to those used by Sir Edwin Chadwick and Mr. Nassau Senior, over seventy years ago! Book Description
How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.
