L'objectif de ce livre est de développer une technique nouvelle de classification d'images qui soit mieux adaptée au traitement d'images complexes de grandes tailles, notamment les images satellitaires radar, par rapport aux méthodes antérieures. Grâce à la combinaison de la technique de réduction substantielle du temps de calcul et de l'occupation mémoire de l'ordinateur, cette méthode permet désormais de traiter beaucoup plus rapidement des images complexes de télédétection. La technique développée part des méthodes usuelles de classification d'images numériques par l'approche supervisée de type maximum de vraisemblance et propose une nouvelle approche de classification exploitant un maximum d'informations fournies par les paramètres de texture aux divers ordres. Un nouveau concept est introduit, celui des « valeurs propres de texture » et sert à mieux caractériser les textures d'images. Des applications de cette approche ont été réalisées avec succès pour la classification des images satellitaires RSO acquises respectivement sur la côte atlantique du Cameroun, sur la mangrove littorale camerounaise et enfin sur la région du Mont Cameroun.
