During 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) jointly undertook a project to identify and assess research and data from four Southeast Asian countries related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 14.4.1 – the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels. The goals of this project were: (1) to increase the visibility of research and datasets by making them searchable on OpenASFA, a system for creating, storing and publishing abstracts and bibliographic references; and (2) to analyse knowledge strengths and gaps in the region and make recommendations for improving the accessibility of research and data. This document presents the final report of the project, including the methodology, results and recommendations for future work.

This document is the report of the twenty-eighth meeting of the Fisheries Subject Group and Seventh Meeting of the Aquaculture Subject Group, held during the intersessional meeting of the Aquaculture Subject and the Fisheries Subject Groups of the Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP), which was held online on 2–5 November 2021. The meeting reviewed progress made since the twenty-sixth session of the CWP and in particular in the activities of five task groups which are developing statistical concepts and measures of catch and fishing effort, a standard for reference harmonization, enhancements in workflow between national and international organizations, best practices in data confidentiality arrangements, and the aquaculture section of the CWP Handbook on Fishery Statistics. The CWP, supported by the participating organizations, serves as the premier international and inter-organizational forum for agreeing common definitions, classifications and standards for the collection of fishery and aquaculture statistics. It provides a mechanism to coordinate the statistical programs conducted by intergovernmental organizations including regional fishery bodies with a remit for fishery statistics. Twelve CWP member organizations participated in the meeting with another regional organization participating as observer.

This publication serves as a guide for countries in exploring how reporting for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators under FAO custodianship serves the scope of compiling information for the biennial transparency reports (BRT) under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF). The paper intends to demonstrate the potential integration of adaptation reporting with SDG and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) global measurable targets and corresponding indicators to advance towards a common understanding of how to track adaptation while informing progress towards the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). It is aimed primarily at technical authorities and experts working on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of adaptation in the agriculture sectors and compiling information to report on adaptation at national and international levels. The strong commitment of the international community, and especially the CPF members, to provide the information necessary for monitoring progress towards global goals, targets and indicators in a comprehensive, efficient, timely and meaningful way led to the idea of developing a global core set of forest-related indicators (GCS). The aim was to simplify and harmonize concepts and terminology while respecting the needs of all potential users. The concrete work on the GCS was initiated in 2016 through an organization-led initiative on the development of global forest indicators. Following the recommendation of this initiative, the CPF members established a GCS taskforce, which developed the GCS. The GCS was presented to the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) and FAO’s Committee on Forestry, which welcomed the progress made in developing the GCS and acknowledged its value for assessing progress and better focusing data-collection efforts to reduce duplication. The two bodies also encouraged the application of those indicators that are ready to use and requested the CPF to continue developing the remaining indicators, particularly those that may require additional efforts but are manageable through various data sources. This is an accompanying document of the FAO report, State of the World’s Forests 2022 (SOFO 2022). It provides an overview of the GCS and presents the latest data on the status and trends of the 21 indicators. SOFO 2022, which examines three potential forest pathways for addressing global challenges, is available separately.
