By the early twenty first century international Tourism had become one of the world’s most important economic activities. Countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Switzerland, Indonesia, Srilanka and Singapore are running their economy by the tourism industry. Tourism is also a growing industry in India. As India is a multi-cultural and colorful country with large number of historical monuments, natural beauties and diversity in language, food habit and dress, so it has been rightly said that “nowhere in the world is found, such a beauty, different and diversified climate, flora, fauna, religions, languages, dialects, dressing patterns, life style and rituals, like India”. India has more potential for developing Tourism industry. In India tourism is not limited to certain sites and spots. Country sides within local colours, health sector and environment are also touched by Tourism. It is like a garland of multicolored flowers which can easily attract foreign tourists to explore new places and experience the change. Tourism promotes international relations, provides direct financial benefit and employment to youths. Tourism can be domestic and international, including both incoming and outgoing. Its importance was recognized in the Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 as “an activity essential to the life of nations because of its direct effects on the social, cultural, educational and economic sectors of national societies and on their international relations.” Tribal tourism also contributes a lot to the socio, cultural and economic sectors of Odisha as well as India. This book “Tourism treasures of Tribal Tracts” is a product of the field study of the Author to the most parts of tribal districts of Odisha. It is written in a simple language and lucid style with picturesque chapters appreciable to all.

This book adopts a collectivist perspective on special interest tourism consumption, bringing together research on ‘special interest tourism’ and ‘niche tourism’ as well as more recent research into the interdisciplinary applications of the sociological concept of neo‐tribes. It promotes a shift in perspective away from special interest tourism understood as a sum of similarly motivated individuals, to a collective view of special interest tourists who share common characteristics (e.g., shared values, beliefs and mutual interests) and group structures. This approach provides a better understanding of groupings that are not unified by a common tourism motivation, but brought together by otherwise conditioned commonalities in actual behavior triggered by supply-side contexts (e.g., Airbnb). The book considers tourism micro‐segments as consumer tribes (i.e., as symbolic communities) in which individuals are embedded and loosely bound together. As there is limited research on the collectivist perspective on special interest tourism consumption, in the first part the book’s conceptual/theoretical discourse contributes to a better understanding of ‘groupings’ in tourism behavior but also collectives that are not unified by a common tourism motivation. Presenting international examples, the book explores in Part 2 the group culture of a range of tourist tribes by describing emerging tourism micro-segments, identifying shared identities, and analyzing their collective mechanisms.

The US government built a military road from Fort Howard (Green Bay) to Michigan's Upper Peninsula soon after the Civil War, causing increased development in what would later become Langlade County and the heavily forested lands that stretched northeastward. The Wolf River proved essential in creating the local logging trade, which in turn drove the expansion of railroad lines. By 1900, logging was slowing down, but the public's growing awareness of Langlade's abundant hunting and fishing resources gave rise to northern Wisconsin's tourism industry. Even Indian tribes gradually participated in the tourist trade. A.J. Kingsbury photographed these transitions. As tourists increasingly moved across the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a surprising number of communities looked to capitalize on the histories of Native American people to create tourist attractions. From the Happy Canyon Indian Pageant and Wild West Show in Pendleton, Oregon, to outdoor dramas like Tecumseh! in Chillicothe, Ohio, and Unto These Hills in Cherokee, North Carolina, locals staged performances that claimed to honor an Indigenous past while depicting that past on white settlers' terms. Linking the origins of these performances to their present-day incarnations, this incisive book reveals how they constituted what Katrina Phillips calls "salvage tourism"—a set of practices paralleling so-called salvage ethnography, which documented the histories, languages, and cultures of Indigenous people while reinforcing a belief that Native American societies were inevitably disappearing. Across time, Phillips argues, tourism, nostalgia, and authenticity converge in the creation of salvage tourism, which blends tourism and history, contestations over citizenship, identity, belonging, and the continued use of Indians and Indianness as a means of escape, entertainment, and economic development.
