Book Description
In this book the authors present a unique synthesis of materials that evolved from the World Conference on Innovative Higher Education, which brought together the heads of universities from over thirty countries, along with other prominent men and women concerned with higher education, to share information on education innovation and change. Much more than simply a conference report, the book addresses the fundamental issues of change in higher education and how change works and where it is leading and looks at the ways in which innovations meet changing needs.

Book Description
At the dawn of the third millennium, we are confronted with a disturbing phenomenon: although global life expectancy still increases, this is not the case for healthy life expectancy! The explanation of this seemingly contradiction is mainly due to the rising prevalence of the new pandemia of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Even in low and middle income countries, the improvement in healthcare status and life expectancy is paralled by the increase of NCDs, as in all countries worldwide. Since the United Nations General Assembly held in New York in 2011, many publications have emphasized the close link between NCDs and nutrition. The NCDs epidemic forces us to reconsider the public health perspectives. Many governments, non-governmental organizations and other institutions are actively involved in educational nutrition programs and campaigns; however their efforts seldom obtain the results hoped for. It is extremely difficult to induce changes in lifestyle and behavior that have built up over a long period of time. However, it becomes urgent to adapt to our changing life-environment where traditional wisdom and intuitive choices are giving way to individual thinking and search for (often uncontrolled) information. This engenders a number of unprecedented challenges and it calls for a re-appraisal of the existing paradigms to achieve an adequate management of the upstream determinants of health instead of a (pre)dominant medical and hospital-centric approach. In the era of personalized healthcare, it is time to empower policy makers, professionals and citizens for achieving an evidence-based change in the health-disease interface and decision-making process for public health interventions. The scientific and professional society Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) has recognized nutrition as a health technology (preventative) by creating a Interest Group (IG) dedicated to research on methodologies and assessments of nutrition-related public health, while taking into account contextual factors (ethical, legal, social, organizational, economic, …) in order to generate meaningful outcomes for establishing evidence-based health policies. This Research Topic aims to elaborate on some of the potential hurdles or guarantees which have to be overcome for the sake of sustainable healthcare provisions anywhere in the world, such as shortcomings in methodological approaches, regulatory frameworks, gaps between evidence, its hierarchy and final recommendations for public health management.

Book Description
By the year 2050, Earth's population will double. If we continue with current farming practices, vast amounts of wilderness will be lost, millions of birds and billions of insects will die, and the public will lose billions of dollars as a consequence of environmental degradation. Clearly, there must be a better way to meet the need for increased food production. Written as part memoir, part instruction, and part contemplation, Tomorrow's Table argues that a judicious blend of two important strands of agriculture--genetic engineering and organic farming--is key to helping feed the world's growing population in an ecologically balanced manner. Pamela Ronald, a geneticist, and her husband, Raoul Adamchak, an organic farmer, take the reader inside their lives for roughly a year, allowing us to look over their shoulders so that we can see what geneticists and organic farmers actually do. The reader sees the problems that farmers face, trying to provide larger yields without resorting to expensive or environmentally hazardous chemicals, a problem that will loom larger and larger as the century progresses. They learn how organic farmers and geneticists address these problems. This book is for consumers, farmers, and policy decision makers who want to make food choices and policy that will support ecologically responsible farming practices. It is also for anyone who wants accurate information about organic farming, genetic engineering, and their potential impacts on human health and the environment.

Book Description
Health Care Crisis? Help is on the way . . . Whatever the composition of your family--an individual living independently, a couple, a multi-generational household with children and/or elders--you want good health and a safe home. But what about all the alarming news of hazards in our environment-in what we eat, drink, breathe, touch? How much control do we really have over our own health and safety? Fortunately, more than you might think. Here, in a commonsense way, "Dr. Doug" Ratner guides you and your family through proactive steps you can take to maximize the well-being of each and every loved one, from the youngest child to the oldest grandparent. He provides easy-to-understand tips and implementation guides so individuals and families can help themselves to the best possible future health. Just some of the topics include: Part One: Introduction and orientation to the material that follows--diagnosis, environmental medicine, scientific studies and how to tell good information from bad. Part Two: A close look at your external world, including how to maintain a healthful and safe home environment. What you need to know about carcinogens and other toxic substances. How to make your home as safe as possible--especially for seniors, children and the disabled. Part Three: A close look at your internal world, including how to maintain a healthy, properly nourished body. What is good food? What's safe? What about herbs and other supplements? Sections B and C form a concise Nutritional Guidebook detailing how nutrients work and what foods can help prevent or ease illnesses. Part Four: A truly innovative look at U.S. health care at present and for the future. Whether we're patients or doctors, we need to be discussing what traditions have become outdated and how we can make the best use of new ideas--like being rewarded for health-minded choices and actions--and of countless new technological developments in the 21st century. This book--lavishly illustrated to both entertain and inform--is not only an invaluable reference to keep in your home, but also the first step into a healthcare program that's been proven to work. It's a whole new approach to managing your own health care, protecting your family from avoidable dangers while shifting your view from "treatment" to "preventive wellness."
