Book Description
A weird green object has appeared in outer space! Thrusting into our solar system from the great gulf beyond, the Green Orb barely registers upon Earth-based instruments, its nature unknown. But Tom Swift begins to wonder if the uncanny wanderer is behind a series of strange incidents - a phony ghost that seems to come to life before Tom's eyes, telephone calls received but never made, violent interference with Tom's space-probing megascope, and even a phantom apparition of the young inventor himself! A manned flyby of the Orb ends in danger and mystery. To pierce the object's veil of secrecy, Tom decides to send a fleet of robot drones, his Video Vikings, on a probe mission, equipped with cameras to relay their findings to Tom's remarkable new invention, the telejector, able to produce startling 3-D images in midair. The Green Orb does not reveal its secrets easily. First Tom and his friend Bud must locate a little girl, key to communicating with the Orb, before she is made to disappear as have a host of ESP-gifted individuals, without explanation. It is only after a gantlet of electrifying thrills that Tom is able at last to visit the space phantom on its own terms - to block the world cataclysm threatened by its ceaseless approach.

Book Description
Much literature for children appears in the form of series, in which familiar characters appear in book after book. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, authors began to write science fiction series for children. These early series generally had plots that revolved around inventions developed by the protagonist. But it was the development and use of rocket and atomic science during World War II that paved the way for interesting and exciting new themes, conflicts, and plots. While much has been written about the early juvenile science fiction series, particularly the Tom Swift books, comparatively little has been written about children's science fiction series published since 1945. This book provides a broad overview of this previously neglected topic. The volume offers a critical look at the history, themes, characters, settings, and construction of post-1945 juvenile science fiction series, including the A.I. Gang, the Animorphs, Commander Toad, Danny Dunn, Dragonfall Five, the Magic School Bus, and Space Cat. The book begins with an introductory history of juvenile science fiction since 1945, with chapters then devoted to particular topics. Some of these topics include the role of aliens and animals, attitudes toward humor, the absence and presence of science, and the characterization of women. A special feature is an appendix listing the various series. In addition, the volume provides extensive bibliographical information.

Book Description
Since antiquity, opposed concepts such as the One and the Many, the Finite and the Infinite, and the Absolute and the Relative, have been a driving force in philosophical, scientific, and mathematical thought. Yet they have also given rise to perplexing problems and conceptual paradoxes which continue to haunt scientists and philosophers. In Oppositions and Paradoxes, John L. Bell explains and investigates the paradoxes and puzzles that arise out of conceptual oppositions in physics and mathematics. In the process, Bell not only motivates abstract conceptual thinking about the paradoxes at issue, but he also offers a compelling introduction to central ideas in such otherwise-difficult topics as non-Euclidean geometry, relativity, and quantum physics. These paradoxes are often as fun as they are flabbergasting. Consider, for example, the famous Tristram Shandy paradox: an immortal man composing an autobiography so slowly as to require a year of writing to describe each day of his life — he would, if he had infinite time, presumably never complete the work, although no individual part of it would remain unwritten. Or think of an office mailbox labelled “mail for those with no mailbox”—if this is a person’s mailbox, how can they possibly have “no mailbox”? These and many other paradoxes straddle the boundary between physics and metaphysics, and demonstrate the hidden difficulty in many of our most basic concepts.

Book Description
Within weeks of putting his outpost in space into geosynchronous orbit, Tom got it into his mind to build a bigger station farther out in an orbit where it will be safe from space debris and where he can have much more room for everything he hopes to accomplish in space. A combination of attacks and events on him and his company make it look like a necessity and much sooner than he would have imagined. But what can he do to get around the logistical nightmare such an undertaking will bring? An elevator from the ground straight up into space has been a dream of writers and engineers for more than a century. Tom puts development of a space elevator on the front burner at Swift Enterprises. His only hope is that it is actually possible.

In this hardbound edition of the 13th novel in the New Tom Swift Invention Series, the young inventor is called down to Helium City to investigate strange noises that seem to be coming up from deep within the wells themselves. So, Tom and his best friend, Bud Barclay, undertake the dangerous mission to go down into the well to find out what is really going on. When that trip turns to near disaster, it is time to call in reinforcements. This comes in the form of an old friend who not only knows the truth must be discovered, he believes that it must be stopped at any cost!
