It was as though He were showing us that the pain and grief we were experiencing had only one equal: His love... and it did not stop pouring out on us." "We spiritually threw ourselves into His loving arms. We had to look beyond human kindness and love. Then we could see that it was our God in heaven holding us near Him in our sorrow and suffering." Book Description
This book tells the story of Jeanie, a young nurse living in South Africa during the Apartheid years. Jeanie is a hard worker and an activist, but in her private life she has to deal with the problems caused by her abusive and aggressive husband and her best friend Zogi, who is struggling with addiction. In a country divided, in which being not only black, but also a woman, is the cause of many injustices, the reader will follow the main character in her everyday life. An interesting perspective, told with honesty, that will underline the many contradictions of those difficult years. Monica Clarke was born in South Africa and worked as a nurse and midwife during the Apartheid years. She then qualified as a lawyer and practised criminal law (mostly political trials) in South Africa for several years. Her involvement with the underground liberation movement, (the African National Congress), led her to flee from the security police. She was then granted political asylum in the UK in the early 1980s. After settling in London, she worked as a commercial lawyer. When her husband had a very severe stroke she stopped working to look after him full time and when he died she took up a position as an Associate Director in the National Health Service (NHS), specialising in engagement and inclusion. Monica works with excluded communities worldwide, telling her story in classrooms, workplaces and boardrooms. She helps institutions to include the voice of their beneficiaries in service delivery, conducting workshops and speaking publicly to support equality agendas, especially in education. In 2013 she founded I PROTECT ME, a non-profit organisation which empowers women and children in South Africa to speak out and stand up against abuse. (See www.IProtectMeSouthAfrica.org) As a journalist with World Pulse, an international online resource for women, she blogs regularly about human rights issues.

Book Description
To Have and to Hold (1899) is a novel by American author Mary Johnston. It was the bestselling novel in the United States in the following year (1900). To Have and to Hold is the story of an English soldier, Ralph Percy, turned Virginian explorer iIPn colonial Jamestown. Ralph buys a wife for himself - a girl named Jocelyn Leigh - little knowing that she is the escaping ward of King James I, fleeing a forced marriage to Lord Carnal. Jocelyn hardly loves Ralph - indeed, she seems to abhor him. Carnal, Jocelyn's husband-to-be, eventually comes to Jamestown, unaware that Ralph Percy and Jocelyn Leigh are man and wife. Lord Carnal attempts to kidnap Jocelyn several times and eventually follows Ralph, Jocelyn, and their two companions - Jeremy Sparrow, the Separatist minister, and Diccon, Ralph's servant - as they escape from the King's orders to arrest Ralph and carry Jocelyn back to England. The boat they are in, however, crashes on a desert island, but they are accosted by pirates, who, after a short struggle, agree to take Ralph as their captain, after he pretends to be the pirate "Kirby". The pirates gleefully play on with Ralph's masquerade, until he refuses to allow them to rape and pillage those aboard Spanish ships. The play is up when the pirates see an English ship off the coast of Florida. Ralph refuses to fire upon it, knowing it carries the new Virginian governor, Sir Francis Wyatt, but the pirates open fire, and Jeremy Sparrow, before the English ship can be destroyed, purposefully crashes the ship into a reef. The pirates are all killed, but the Englishmen (and woman) are rescued by the Governor's ship.

Book Description
To Have and Have Not is the dramatic, brutal story of Harry Morgan, an honest boat owner who is forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West as a means of keeping his crumbling family financially afloat. His adventures lead him into the world of the wealthy and dissipated yachtsmen who swarm the region, and involve him in a strange and unlikely love affair. In this harshly realistic, yet oddly tender and wise novel, Hemingway perceptively delineates the personal struggles of both the “haves” and the “have nots” and creates one of the most subtle and moving portraits of a love affair in his oeuvre. In turn funny and tragic, lively and poetic, remarkable in its emotional impact, To Have and Have Not takes literary high adventure to a new level. As the Times Literary Supplement observed, “Hemingway's gift for dialogue, for effective understatement, and for communicating such emotions the tough allow themselves, has never been more conspicuous.”

Book Description
A clinical psychologist’s exploration of the modern dilemmas women face in the wake of new motherhood When Molly Millwood became a mother, she was fully prepared for what she would gain: an adorable baby boy; hard-won mothering skills; and a messy, chaotic, beautiful life. But what she did not expect was what she would lose: aspects of her identity, a baseline level of happiness, a general sense of wellbeing. And though she had the benefit of a supportive husband during this transition, she also at times resented the fact that the disruption to his life seemed to pale in comparison to hers. As a clinical psychologist, Molly knew her experience was a normal response to a life-changing event. But without the advantage of such a perspective, many of the patients she treated in her private practice grappled with self-doubt, guilt, and fear, and suffered the dual pain of not only the struggle to adjust but also the overwhelming shame for struggling at all. In To Have and to Hold, Molly explores the complex terrain of new motherhood, illuminating the ways it affects women psychologically, emotionally, physically, and professionally—as well as how it impacts their partnership. Along with the arrival of a bundle of joy come thorny issues such as self-worth, control, autonomy, and dependency. And for most new mothers, these issues are experienced within the context of an intimate relationship, adding another layer of tension, conflict, and confusion to an already challenging time. As Molly examines the inextricable link between women’s well-being as new mothers and the well-being of their relationships, she offers guidance to help readers reclaim their identities, overcome their guilt and shame, and repair their relationships. A blend of personal narrative, scientific research, and stories from Molly’s clinical practice, To Have and to Hold provides a much-needed lifeline to new mothers everywhere.
