Book Description
Excerpt from Through Lands That Were Dark, Being a Record of a Year's Missionary Journey, in Africa and Madagascar Nor does the discussion of questions of missionary policy or any account of the details of the work in the various fields fall within the scope of this book. These matters have been dealt with in Reports prepared for the Directors of the Society. Further information with regard to all the fields can be obtained in the Society's Annual Report. Some account of Madagascar and the missionary work there will be also found in a book just published, entitled Madagascar for Christ, being the Joint Report of the Simultaneous Deputations from the London Missionary Society, The Friends' Foreign Mission Association, and the Paris Missionary Society, which have recently returned from Madagascar.* The journey has been one of great fascination. From the point of view of the traveller it has been full of interest. From the point of View of a Secretary of a Missionary Society carrying on work in the lands visited, the out standing impression has been that of the growing Christian Church. In Central Africa that Church is in its infancy, but it is an infancy full of promise. In South Africa and Madagascar the Native Church is nearly a century old. Its foundations have been well and truly laid, and it exhibits all the signs of healthy life and growth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Through Lands That Were Dark, Being a Record of a Year's Missionary Journey, in Africa and Madagascar I hear a clear voice calling, calling, Calling out of the night, O, you who live in the Light of Life, Bring us the Light! We are bound in the chains of darkness, Our eyes received no sight, O, you who have never been bound or blind, Bring us the Light! We live amid turmoil and horror, Where might is the only right, O, you to whom life is liberty, Bring us the Light! We stand in the ashes of ruins, We are ready to fight the fight, O, you whose feet are firm on the Rock, Bring us the Light! You cannot - you shall not forget us, Out here in the darkest night, We are drowning men, we are dying men, Bring, O, bring us the Light! John Oxenham. Book Description
Excerpt from In Lands Afar: A Second Series of Mission Stories of Many Lands, a Book for Young People; Profusely Illustrated This region which we have thus briefly described is most interesting to us because it is so intimately connected with the missionary labors of Moffat and Livingstone and other brave and sainted men who have given their lives for the benefit of their fellow-men. Robert Moffat labored long and successfully among the Bechuanas. Livingstone went from Kuruman, which you will find on the sketch map, northward to Lake Ngami, and then on until he reached the Zambesi, discovering the Victoria Falls, probably the most marvelous of all the cataracts on the face of the earth. Later, Livingstone went still farther north ward, revealing to the world something of the horrors of the slave traffic and calling upon Christendom to send the gospel to the tribes of the interior. Upon the northern boundaries of what is now called Zambesia, Livingstone died, while upon his knees praying for Africa. Sooner than he thought has the civilized world reached out to the region which he explored, and commerce and Christian missionaries have attempted to do what he sought to have them do. Book Description
Excerpt from In the Heart of Savagedom: Reminiscences of Life and Adventure During a Quarter of a Century of Pioneering Missionary Labours in the Wilds of East Equatorial Africa Piles of folios which might be of absorbing interest to many readers had to be laid aside, inasmuch as they were too heavily weighted with maternal cares and the multitudinous annoyances and vexations which surge about the life of the pioneering Missionary, and hence would not be of the same public importance as the more prominent outline of events here recorded. Many of the manuscripts were hastily inscribed in disjointed sentences, as if life were full of battle and duties urgently pressing while others gave evidence of being penned under circumstances of great privation and imminent peril. Some of the notes were full of peaceful 'praise and hopeful expectation, but on a few there were real tear-marks, which registered the depths of sorrow and heart-strain under which they were written. At times there were long breaks intervening, which indicated periods of fever, prolonged convalescence and weary anxiety over the illness of others, who were lying on the verge of the grave. All of the papers were be smeared with the pale yellow and reddish-tinged ochre of the jungle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
