The novelty of Arctic service had passed with all, while the unvarying routine and wearisome monotony could not but more deeply depress the spirits of the men. The non-arrival of the visiting steamer not only in itself threw a gloom over the party, but it necessitated a restriction in the use of certain articles of food, and the feeling alone of being on allowance is irksome to many men. I had carefully preserved for the second year the regulation allowance of vegetables, flour, etc., but had used of these articles the entire margin allowed for wastage and loss, as well as the surplus resulting from the return of three men the preceding year.
