Essays on Housing Policy
Author: J. B. Cullingworth
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000296822
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
Originally published in 1979, these essays provide a guide to the labyrinth of issues which together made up ‘housing policy’ in the late 20th Century. The focus is on the practical and political difficulties of devising measures which meet policy objectives – difficulties which are just as prevalent in the 21st Century. The search for ‘comprehensive strategies’ is shown to be a vain one: given the number of relevant issues and their complexity, only an incremental approach is practicable. Major issues are discussed in the context of an analysis of the institutional, historical and financial framework within which housing policy is formulated and operated.

Mass Society and Its Culture, and Three Essays concerning Etienne Gilson on Bergson, Christian Philosophy, and Art
Author: Etienne Gilson
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666717924
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 197
Book Description
A medievalist and defender of the notion of Christian philosophy, Étienne Gilson had a lifelong interest in the philosophy of art. He questioned whether what is reproduced as art in contemporary society is art at all. This is not a simple issue. A cheap version of a novel is still a novel. A picture of a statue is not a statue, nor indeed is a photograph of a painting a painting. Recorded music has particular complications. The organizer of an industrial assembly line is neither an artist nor an artisan. Yet, thanks to such mass production, a much broader population has knowledge of artworks than would otherwise be possible. Religions must minister to mass societies and provide appropriate liturgies. But in the process, there is a danger of misrepresenting complex religious teachings. At the end of his own life, Henri Gouhier, Gilson’s first doctoral student, prepared three essays on Gilson. The first, on Bergson, gives a sense of Gilson’s formation in early twentieth-century French philosophy. The second reconstructs the development of the notion of Christian philosophy and the heated controversy it provoked. Finally, Gouhier presents Gilson’s general philosophy of art and gives a helpful framework to Gilson’s comments on art in a mass society.

The New Urban Economics
Author: H.W. Richardson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135683042
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 279
Book Description
This book was first published in 1977. Urban economics is a relatively young field of economics; hardly existing except perhaps in real estate and land economics curricula-before the 1960s. Within the last few years, especially after 1 971, there has been a growth of interest in urban economic theory, strong enough even to attract the attention of general economic theorists. These new theoretical writings have been named the 'New Urban Economics'-NUE for short. The aim of this monograph is to survey and assess NUE, to evaluate its contribution to urban economics, to offer a few extensions and to say something about the future direction of the subfield.
