Excerpt from Thirty-Second Annual Report of the American Madura Mission, 1866 In two congregations at Dindigul the people have under great difficulties built convenient places of worship with but very little aid from the Missionary. In one case the build ing was completed, when, under the pressure of famine, it was no uncommon thing for the people in that vicinity to take the thatch from their dwelling houses to keep their starving cattle alive. The opposition of the Romanists at this station is a marked feature in the work. Many of our people were formerly Romanists, and 011 leaving that church met with opposition and persecution from former friends and relatives. This year a noble opportunity has been improved to obey the scriptural injunction to return good for evil, to heap coals of fire on the heads of our enemies. In the prevalence of cholera many of these persecutors have received medicine of the Missionary, and attention and care from the catechists. May it lead them to give up. Excerpt from The Thirty-Third Annual Report of the American Madura Mission, 1867 The health of the mission families, during the year, with one or two exceptions, has been unusually good. Our children have all been watched over by a kind Providence, and one has been added to the number. An aggregate of ten months only was spent away from their stations, for change and rest, by 'five families. But while we have abundant occasion for gratitude for the blessing of health, for the safe return of those, who were compelled to leave the work for a season and for the valuable accession to our number, we have been called to mourn the death of one, by all beloved, who left India in company with her husband, she, apparently, the stronger of the two, and elated with the happy'prospect of soon meeting her aged parents and her beloved children in America. But the death angel came in an unexpected hour, and our dear sister Rendall, amid circumstances and scenes which she would have least desired, was suddenly cut down, and found her final resting place in the Mediterranean Sea. This is a heavy blow to the mission; and to our bereaved brother and his mother less children how severe! We mourn for them, and we mourn for ourselves. Their loss and ours is immense. But we cannot mourn for her. Though her career has been shorter than we desired, she has finished an earnest and successful life work, and has gone home to be with that Saviour in whom she trusted, with a child-like faith. The Providence which removed from our mission 'circle one whom we could so ill afford to spare, is dark and mysterious. Excerpt from Thirty-Fourth Annual Report of the American Madura Mission, 1868 The Village schools were never more hopeful. We now have 21 schools containing 380 pupils, being a gain on last year of 46 pupils. Our highest number in any one school is 32. The average is 185 Nine schools have over 20 each. Seven of the schools are taught by females, and 37 of the pupils are girls, all but four of whom are from Christian families. In most of the schools we have introduced uniform school registers with great advantage, but a still greater benefit has been the appointing of a school superintend ent, who has examined the schools and reported on them monthly. We have begun to collect fees from the pupils, usually in the shape of charity money, which, in two cases, has amounted to one-fourth of the teachers' wages.
