Book Description
ABSTRACT: Three quantum well infrared photodetectors are characterized utilizing noise spectral density and current-voltage measurements taken at a variety of temperatures and biases. Though all devices were fabricated using the GaAs/InGaAs material system, each has a unique morphology. D1 had three different quantum wells per period and 20 periods. D2 had one type of quantum well and 10 periods. D3 had one type of quantum well, 5 periods, and asymmetric barriers. Measurement temperatures for D1 ranged between 80 K and 180 K with bias values for each temperature between zero and 35 mA. For D2 and D3 measurement temperatures ranged between 80 K and 125 K with bias values for each temperature between zero and 10 mA. Utilizing models for thermionic emission current and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling current the current-voltage characteristic of each device was compared with the theory. The thermionic emission model did well for all devices at low bias. The tunneling model did well for all devices at high bias. In the middle range of biases D1 was underestimated by the models, D3 was overestimated by the models, and D2 was modeled well by a sum of the two models.

Book Description
Photonic devices lie at the heart of the communications revolution, and have become a large and important part of the electronic engineering field, so much so that many colleges now treat this as a subject in its own right. With this in mind, the author has put together a unique textbook covering every major photonic device, and striking a careful balance between theoretical and practical concepts. The book assumes a basic knowledge of optics, semiconductors and electromagnetic waves. Many of the key background concepts are reviewed in the first chapter. Devices covered include optical fibers, couplers, electro-optic devices, magneto-optic devices, lasers and photodetectors. Problems are included at the end of each chapter and a solutions set is available. The book is ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate courses, but being device driven it is also an excellent engineers' reference.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive review of established, cutting-edge, and future trends in the exponentially growing field of nanomaterials and their applications in biosensors and bioanalyses. Part I focuses on the key principles and transduction approaches, reviewing the timeline featuring the important historical milestones in the development and application of nanomaterials in biosensors and bioanalyses. Part II reviews various architectures used in nanobiosensing designs focusing on nanowires, one- and two-dimensional nanostructures, and plasmonic nanobiosensors with interferometric reflectance imaging. Commonly used nanomaterials, functionalization of the nanomaterials, and development of nanobioelectronics are discussed in detail in Part III with examples from screen-printed electrodes, nanocarbon films, and semiconductor quantum dots. Part IV reviews the current applications of carbon nanotubes, nanoneedles, plasmonic sensors, electrochemical scanning microscopes, and field-effect transistors with the future outlook for emerging technologies. Attention is also given to potential challenges, in particular, of taking these technologies at the point-of-need. The book concludes by providing a condensed summary of the contents, with emphasis on future directions. Nanomaterials have become an essential part of biosensors and bioanalyses in the detection and monitoring of medical, pharmaceutical, and environmental conditions, from cancer to chemical warfare agents. This book, with its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, will be an essential guide for all those involved in the research, design, development, and application of nanomaterials in biosensors and bioanalyses.
