Book Description
Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching Art A training that calls for a very direct exercise of the critical powers, developing judgment and skill, is a training that will increase the individual's efficiency whatever his calling may be. The general public has not thought of art education in this way, but has acknowledged the value of "drawing," especially when it can serve some utilitarian purpose. A better understanding of the true usefulness of art recognizes creative power as a divine gift, the natural endowment of every human soul, showing itself at first in the form that we call appreciation. This appreciation leads a certain number to produce actual works of art, greater or lesser, - perhaps a temple, perhaps only a cup - but it leads the majority to desire finer form and more harmony of tone and color in surroundings and things for daily use. It is the individual's right to have full control of these powers. Even from the economic side, that education is deficient which leaves one unable to judge of form and color when he is constantly required to use such judgment. This lack of appreciation is responsible for an immense waste of labor, skill and money in the production of useless and ugly things. Works of fine art stand among the things which the world prizes most highly. A nation's ideals are revealed in its art. and its art has greatest value when it is the expression of the spirit of the whole people. Book Description
Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching It is ill protesting too much. Many good resolutions of silence made and confirmed during thirty years of school-work, as every hope of a public character which brightened the early days was destroyed, have been broken by the appearance of this book. Success only strengthened the conviction that it was useless to speak; and yet when the conviction seemed strongest some folly has swept it away. Or is it instinct, like the prescient idiotcy of the butterfly, that lays its eggs on cabbage leaf, or nettle, forced by a blind impulse to thwart its own experience, and deposit part of its life where no sign warrants an idea that it will be allowed to live? Book Description
Excerpt from Theory and Practice of Teaching: Or the Motives and Methods of Good School Keeping If the following volume meets a similar fate, what ever its merits, it shall lack a like excuse. This work has had its origin in a desire to contribute something toward elevating an impor tant and rising profession. Its matter comprises the substance of a part of the course of lectures addressed to the classes of the Institution under my charge, during the past two years. Those lectures, unwritten at first, were delivered in a familiar, colloquial style, - their main Object being the inculcation of such practical views as would best promote the improvement of the teacher. In writing the matter out for the press, the same style, to a considerable extent, has been retained, as I have written with an aim at usefulness rather than rhetorical effect. Excerpt from The Science and Art of Teaching: Or, the Principles and Practice of Education Our design in preparing the following work was to furnish student-teachers, and others engaged in education, with a Manual containing a comprehensive resume, within a moderate compass, of all the more important principles and details of their Profession. In the execution of this task we have endeavoured to combine brevity with clearness, so that our mode of expression might be as simple and direct as was consistent with the nature of the subject.
