Book Description
Excerpt from On the Theory and Calculation of Continuous Bridges The following pages are divided into three chapters. The first presents by way of introduction some of the elementary principles of continuous girders, and the fundamental ideas relating to the calculation of strains. The second gives the theory of flexure as applied to the continuous truss of constant cross section, and exhibits it in formulae (I) to (VI), ready for application to any particular case; and the third gives an example of the computation of strains in a continuous truss of live unequal spans, with some useful hints concerning the practical building of such bridges. The theory of flexure indicates that, by the use of continuous instead of single span bridges, a saving in material of from twenty to forty per cent. may be effected. It is easy indeed to say that this advantage will be entirely swallowed up by the effect of changes of temperature, increased labor of erection, or additional cost of workmanship, but by no amount of reasoning can such disadvantages be estimated. Book Description
Excerpt from Suspension Bridges, Arch Ribs and Cantilevers The assumption in the method of de ections that all moving load is uniformly distributed over the span in determining the expression for the work involved through vertical de ection, as a general procedure, is certain open to serious criticism, as will be indicated. A full consideration, therefore, of all the features of the two methods justifies the use of the Method of Least Work, especially with the adjusted centre sag, as being at least equally accurate with the method of de ections, while its equations are certainly simpler and more easily workable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Design and Estimated Weight of a Cantilever Bridge: A Thesis To demonstrate the fact, that the principles involved in analyzing a Cantilever Bridge are of a most elementary character, a complete set of values for stresses in the members of such a structure has been made. The method of Coefficients, which considers a load of unity concentrated at each panel point, was the plan adopted for the work. Since the analytical and graphical determination for stresses are selfexplanatory, little explanation for the theory. Book Description
"As a rule, engineers in active practice have neither time nor inclination to enter upon laborious theoretical calculations when sufficiently accurate results for all practical purposes can be obtained by more simple means. The aim of this work is primarily to furnish easily understood rules whereby problems connected with bridge construction may be treated analytically and graphically. Examples are given of the various types of existing bridges constructed either of timber or steel. In every instance, the calculations and designs are set out step by step in their development and the illustrations have been reproduced from the working drawings."--Preface.
