Book Description
In recent years, the free-electron laser (FEL) has demonstrated its value as a tunable source of bright, coherent radiation with photon energies up to the X-ray region. For such short radiation wavelengths, three-dimensional (3D) effects (due to diffraction, emittance and focusing) become significant and must be taken into consideration. In this work, we present a systematic, fully 3D theoretical formalism applicable to a range of concepts for compact, high-gain FELs. These include novel schemes involving the use of transverse gradient (TGU) or laser undulators. Our approach utilizes either a standard eigenmode analysis for constant-parameter systems or a non-eigenmode expansion technique in terms of orthogonal transverse modes for cases where the parameters of the electron beam and/or the undulator vary along the longitudinal direction. The results we obtain fully characterize the system (electron beam and radiation) in the linear regime of the interaction and are shown to be in excellent agreement with simulation. Moreover, the formalism developed here can be used in comprehensive, theory-based optimization studies, with significant applications in FEL design.

Book Description
This dissertation focuses on the study of novel high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) operation schemes with external seed lasers. The technique of manipulating the phase space of the electron beam, which is widely used in novel seeded FEL schemes, is systematically studied. Several novel FEL schemes are proposed for the generation of intense coherent FEL pulses with short wavelength, sub-femtosecond pulse length or multiple carrier frequency properties, which meet the needs of FEL users. Results of experiments are described for the recently proposed FEL schemes such as echo-enabled harmonic generation and cascaded high-gain harmonic generation. New photon/electron beam diagnostic methods are also developed for these experiments and future high-gain FEL facilities.

Book Description
At the time that we decided to begin work on this book, several other volumes on the free-electron laser had either been published or were in press. The earliest work of which we were aware was published in 1985 by Dr T. C. Marshall of Columbia University [1]. This book dealt with the full range of research on free-electron lasers, including an overview of the extant experiments. However, the field has matured a great deal since that time and, in our judgement, the time was ripe for a more extensive work which includes the most recent advances in the field. The fundamental work in this field has largely been approached from two distinct and, unfortunately, separate viewpoints. On the one hand, free-electron lasers at sub-millimetre and longer wavelengths driven by low-energy and high-current electron beams have been pursued by the plasma physics and microwave tube communities. This work has confined itself largely to the high-gain regimes in which collective effects may play an important role. On the other hand, short-wavelength free-electron lasers in the infrared and optical regimes have been pursued by the accelerator and laser physics community. Due to the high-energy and low-current electron beams appropriate to this spectral range, these experiments have operated largely in the low-gain single-particle regimes. The most recent books published on the free-electron laser by Dr C. A.

Book Description
The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts and links to other fields of physics are provided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the most important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, space charge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The world’s first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give an impression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremely intense radiation in the Angstrøm regime. The appendices contain supplementary material and more involved calculations.

Book Description
This is the final report of the Free Electron Laser Theoretical Study carried out by TRW for the AFOSR during the period July 80 to September 81. Four distinct but interrelated problems that play an important role in the characteristics of a Free Electron Laser oscillator were investigated: (1) Transverse Effects: The effect of wiggler field inhomogeneity as well as the influence of different transverse profiles of the signal field and the electron beam on the FEL characteristics were studied in detail. A dramatic decrease in gain and efficiency is found with increasing value of the ratio of electron beam radius to photon beam radius. (2) Small Signal (SS) Gain: A1-D investigation of the small signal gain for a Tapered Wiggler Free Electron Laser was performed analytically for cold electron beams and numerically for cold and warm electron beams. It was found that the small signal gain spectrum shifts and decreases in amplitude as a function of increasing wiggler taper. (3) Multicomponent Wiggler Free Electron Laser (MCWFEL): The results from (1) and (2) motivated the development of a new FEL configuration that could have high small signal gain and sufficiently high efficiency at high powers with nearly the same output frequency. The new FEL is a combination of several wiggler components. (4) Finite Pulse Length Simulations and Kinetic Effects of Trapped Particle Instabilities in Free Electron Lasers: A 1-D finite pulse code was developed and the effects of pulse slippage detrapping of electrons at the beam edge and parasitic instabilities investigated for a tapered wiggler Free Electron Laser. (Author).
