Book Description
Four new workstations were acquired, and five existing workstations were upgraded to use in continuing investigations of weak interactions between atomic boron and various atomic and molecular partners (Ar, H2, N2). The theoretical techniques used involved (i) the ab initio determination of potential energy surfaces, (ii) the quantum determination of bend-stretch levels of weakly bound complexes, and (iii) the simulation, using genetic algorithm and diffusion Monte-Carlo techniques, of the structure of larger clusters. The acquisition of the new workstations has made possible new calculations, at a level of complexity and sophistication not hitherto possible. These calculations have allowed the interpretation of ongoing, related experimental work at the The Johns Hopkins University.

Book Description
The fourth course of the International School of Physics of Exotic Atoms took place at the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scien tific Culture, Erice, from March 31 to April 6, 1984. As tradition, exotic atoms have been a tool for studying elec tromagnetic, weak and strong interactions at low energies. We felt it appropriate to have a full course devoted to a discussion of the information to be gained on the fundamental interactions from the study of low energy systems. In this kind of physics, which is characterized experimentally by very intense particle sources and very sensitive apparatuses, one can search for rare events and can perform precise measurements. Sensitive tests of the predictions of current theories of electro weak and strong interactions can thus be achieved. The course was attended by 54 participants from 23 institutes in 9 countries. The morning lectures reviewed the achievements of the field in the last few years and the afternoon seminars dealt with new results and projects.

Book Description
This book presents and describes a series of unusual and striking strong-field phenomena concerning atoms and free electrons. Some of these phenomena are: multiphoton stimulated bremsstrahlung, free-electron lasers, wave-packet physics, above-threshold ionization, and strong-field stabilization in Rydberg atoms. The theoretical foundations and causes of the phenomena are described in detail, with all the approximations and derivations discussed. All the known and relevant experiments are described too, and their results are compared with those of the existing theoretical models. An extensive general theoretical introduction gives a good basis for subsequent parts of the book and is an independent and self-sufficient description of the most efficient theoretical methods of the strong-field and multiphoton physics. This book can serve as a textbook for graduate students.

Book Description
Control of atomic motion with resonant laser light is the most interesting field of research which is rapidly expanding. The book discusses the latest theoretical and experimental achievements in the study of these phenomena. The fundamental questions of the theory of resonant light pressure are given in the book. They are: 1. Optical Stern-Gerlach Effect and Quantization of Atomic Motion in a Light Field; 2. Theory of Light Pressure Force and Atomic Kinetics in a Strong Field; 3. Diffraction and Interference of Atoms; 4. Velocity Bunching Effect, Cooling and Localization of Atoms in Light Field, and 5. Polarization Phenomena and Recoil Effect. The most important experiments are also discussed in this book. While the book may be used to get a primary acquaintance with the subject, specialists will also find the latest theoretical and experimental results and achievements in this field discussed here.

Book Description
This grant has contributed to the establishment of a strong group in Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at Clark Atlanta University. The general thrust of the group has been: (l) the development of novel theoretical methods for application to electron scattering at small-scattering angles, propulsion technologies and planetary atmospheres; 2) the calculation, using extensive configuration-interaction wave functions in sophisticated methodologies of energy levels, optical oscillator strengths, effective collision strengths for use in plasma modeling and photoionization cross sections; and 3) the support of minority students who are underrepresented in the physical and mathematical sciences The acquisition through tho AFOSR research grant of the powerful IBM RISC 6OOO/590 workstation and attendant software as well as the support of a Post-doctoral Fellow and students have improved the research environment at the Center for theoretical Studies of Physical Systems (CTSPS) and impacted the training of students in the Atlanta University Center, the largest consortium of private HBCUs in the nation. National and international visitors and collaborators have been attracted to CTSPS, creating an excellent environment for research, thereby advancing the field of small-angle electron scattering to a level that has never been attained before. The project has been very productive. Twenty-five publications have been generated with an additional six publications submitted for publication in refereed journals. Additionally, 31 papers have been presented at national and international conferences over the past three years.

Book Description
As part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation requested that the National Research Council assess the opportunities, over roughly the next decade, in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) science and technology. In particular, the National Research Council was asked to cover the state of AMO science, emphasizing recent accomplishments and identifying new and compelling scientific questions. Controlling the Quantum World, discusses both the roles and challenges for AMO science in instrumentation; scientific research near absolute zero; development of extremely intense x-ray and laser sources; exploration and control of molecular processes; photonics at the nanoscale level; and development of quantum information technology. This book also offers an assessment of and recommendations about critical issues concerning maintaining U.S. leadership in AMO science and technology.

Book Description
The Center for Theoretical Studies of the University of Miami has been the host of annual winter conferences whose content has expanded from the particular topic of symmetry principles in high energy physics to encompass the bases and relationships of many branches of know ledge. The scope of the Tenth Coral Gables Conference on Fundamental Interactions included astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, fundamental theories of gravi tation, of electromagnetism, and of hadrons, gauge theories of weak and electromagnetic interactions, high energy physics, liquid helium physics, and theoretical biology. The range of topics is partially represented by the scientific talks which form this book. The tangible fruits of the conference are these papers; the intangible ones are the changes of outlook which the participants experienced and the new appreciation they gained of the basic unity of all knowledge. Historically, the early Coral Gables Conferences witnessed the introduction of the concept of the quark and the attempts to formulate a unification of the in ternal and space-time symmetries of the elementary particles, while later ones were the initial forums for new unified theories of interactions and for the ideas of scaling, light-cone dominance, and partons.
