The splendid full dress uniforms of the British Army, now so rarely seen, were a familiar sight prior to the Great War. Once, a soldier's unit or branch of the service could be recognised from his dress: the colour of his tunic, the shape of his head-dress, the presence or otherwise of characteristic embroidery, cords and chains. Today such knowledge is largely confined to individual enthusiasts. Through his meticulous and beautiful paintings, Lieutenant Colonel MacLeod has created a permanent record of the ceremony, grace and dignity of the last of the British Army's full dress, now only used in military tattoos and other ceremonial occasions.
