The intellectual societies known as Academies played a vital role in the development of culture, and scholarly debate throughout Italy between 1525-1700. They were fundamental in establishing the intellectual networks later defined as the ‘République des Lettres’, and in the dissemination of ideas in early modern Europe, through print, manuscript, oral debate and performance. This volume surveys the social and cultural role of Academies, challenging received ideas and incorporating recent archival findings on individuals, networks and texts. Ranging over Academies in both major and smaller or peripheral centres, these collected studies explore the interrelationships of Academies with other cultural forums. Individual essays examine the fluid nature of academies and their changing relationships to the political authorities; their role in the promotion of literature, the visual arts and theatre; and the diverse membership recorded for many academies, which included scientists, writers, printers, artists, political and religious thinkers, and, unusually, a number of talented women. Contributions by established international scholars together with studies by younger scholars active in this developing field of research map out new perspectives on the dynamic place of the Academies in early modern Italy. Constantly in action, they were forever being used up, replaced, or abandoned as ways of reading changed. As such they document the acts of early musicians and the practices of everyday life at the unseen margins of elite society. Materialities is a cultural history of song on the page. Pollastra and the Origins of Twelfth Night addresses two closely linked and increasingly studied issues: the nature of the relation of Shakespeare's plays to Italian culture, and the technology of modern theater invented in Renaissance Italy. The discovery of forgotten works by Giovanni Lappoli, known as Pollastra, led to publication in Italy in 1993 in a limited edition of the Italian texts with supplemental scholarship by the authors, entitled Romance and Aretine Humanism in Sienese Comedy. One of those texts, the comedy Parthenio, has escaped the attention of theater bibliographers, because it was quickly sold out in its time and only a handful of copies are known to exist today. Yet it played an important part in the birth of Italian Renaissance drama and of modern comedy in general, in that it was the immediate predecessor and source of Gl'Ingannati, arguably the most famous comedy of the Italian Renaissance and certainly the most imitated, translated, adapted all over Europe. The best known of its progeny is Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Much has been written in Italy and England about Gl'Ingannati and Shakespeare's debt to it, but nothing at all about Parthenio. This volume provides the first English translation (with the original Italian on facing pages); and presents for an international audience the theatrical scholarship from the 1993 book Romance and Aretine Humanism in Sienese Comedy, augmented with new findings.

The Florentine poet Antonio Malatesti (1610-1672) earned a brief but significant mention in the earliest history of Italian literature for his contributions to the renewal of the sonnet form in two genres, enigmatography and dithyrambic poetry. In more recent times, his name has cropped up most frequently because of a sequence of fifty bawdy sonnets entitled La Tina, equivoci rusticali, which Malatesti dedicated and presented to the young John Milton on the occasion of his visit to Florence in 1638. The dedication manuscript disappeared soon after Milton's death and remained practically unknown until 1757, when it was found on a bookstall in London and copied as a curiosity. Then it disappeared again, and some scholars even suggested that it had never existed. The present critical edition is based on the rediscovered autograph manuscript dedicated to Milton. The sonnets are furnished with linguistic footnotes and prefaced by a note on the author from a previously unknown copy by Giuseppe Baretti (1719-1789). A comprehensive introduction sheds light on the history of the manuscript, using new archival research, and it contributes to a wider understanding of Malatesti's minor but exemplary position in the history of seventeenth-century Italian literature.
