Book Description
According to Jewish theology, the Evil Inclination, or yetzer ha-ra, is the little voice inside us all, goading us -- against our better judgment -- to do bad things. Travels with the Evil Inclination is Gershon Winkler's hilarious account of his struggles with the Evil One and the life journey that takes him from an ultra-Orthodox upbringing in Brooklyn, New York, to an ultra-Flexidox lifestyle in rural New Mexico. Through his early childhood in Denmark and his yeshiva boyhood in Brooklyn, his years in the U.S. Army and those spent ranching in Colorado, Winkler's faith and belief undergo constant upheaval as he grapples towards a reconciliation of his passion for religious tradition with his passion for things more earthly. With irreverence and humor, Winkler tells his tale of personal spiritual dissolution and his subsequent re-emergence as a teacher and writer exploring the long-forgotten connections between Judaism and shamanism. Travels with the Evil Inclination is an inspiring and entertaining story of the unusual life of a most original man.

If you thought Duane Swierczynski's The Blonde and Severance Package were page turners, hold on to your seat. Expiration Date is a detective novel with a time-travel twist that will leave readers gasping. In this neighborhood, make a wrong turn... and you're history. Mickey Wade is a recently-unemployed journalist who lucked into a rent-free apartment—his sick grandfather's place. The only problem: it's in a lousy neighborhood—the one where Mickey grew up, in fact. The one he was so desperate to escape. But now he's back. Dead broke. And just when he thinks he's reached rock bottom, Mickey wakes up in the past. Literally. At first he thinks it's a dream. All of the stores he remembered from his childhood, the cars, the rumble of the elevated train. But as he digs deeper into the past, searching for answers about the grandfather he hardly knows, Mickey meets the twelve-year-old kid who lives in the apartment below. The kid who will grow up to someday murder Mickey's father.

Book Description
Finalist for a 2014 Alberta Literary Award Shortlisted for the 2014Edmonton Public Library Alberta Readers' Choice Award When Marie MacPherson, a mother of two, finds herself unexpectedly pregnant at thirty-nine, she feels guilty. Her best friend, Elizabeth, has never been able to conceive, despite years of fertility treatments. Marie's dilemma is further complicated when she becomes convinced something is wrong with her baby. She then enters the world of genetic testing and is entirely unprepared for the decision that lies ahead. Intertwined throughout the novel is the story of Margaret, who gave birth to a daughter with Down syndrome in 1947, when such infants were defined as "unfinished" children. As the novel shifts back and forth through the decades, the lives of the three women converge, and the story speeds to an unexpected conclusion. With skill and poise, debut novelist Theresa Shea dramatically explores society's changing views of Down syndrome over the past sixty years. The story offers an unflinching and compassionate history of the treatment of people with Down syndrome and their struggle for basic human rights. Ultimately, The Unfinished Child is an unforgettable and inspiring tale about the mysterious and complex bonds of family, friendship, and motherhood.

Book Description
Like most kids, teachers asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. That question was hard to answer as a black girl growing up in Harlem in the 1950s. When I tried to look back beyond my grandmother to understand my family's past, there was an ugly stain on our history left by slavery and then just a dark blur. It was said we came from Africa. Where exactly? I didn't know. There was no connection. When I looked around me, I saw crime, violence, and drugs spreading malignity through the black community. Meanwhile, the old staples—faith and family values—were like walls slowly crumbling down. I glanced ahead, but it was hard to see past things modeled at home, wrong words said or negative messages telegraphed to me in books and media that poo-pooed my potential. They didn't bode well for my future. What was I to do? The only thing I could. I summoned whatever I had in me, used my ghetto beginnings to push against, and then propelled forward. I completed my education, developed a teaching career in the NYC public schools, and bought a house. I felt like I was finally "somebody." A health issue came along and gave me a one-two punch. I became unable to walk and speak. My sense of worth was immediately placed in jeopardy when I joined a new group of disadvantaged—the disabled. I had to climb back up to acceptance and respectability and achieve normalcy. I asked myself, could I find a voice and still make a difference? This book is how I answered that. It is a story about finding strength, hope, and a higher quality of life.
