Excerpt from The World Wool Situation: August 22, 1929; Wool-18 Imports of wool into the United States during the first six months of 1929 were 28 million pounds greater than last year. More than half of this increase was in carpet wools and about 13 million pounds were combing wools. Receipts of domestic wools at Boston were light for the first seven months of 1929 and amounted to 128 million or about 18 per cent less than year. Wool machinery was much more active in June than last year and con sumption of wool Was 3 million pounds greater according to the Census. The quantity of wool consumed from January 1 to June 80 was 255 million pounds compared with 226 million last year. Consumption of dumbing and clothing wools increased nearly 16 million pounds and carpet wools nearly 13 million. Use in 1970 is expected to mm] 80 to 85 million pounds, compared with last year's 94 million pounds, scoured basis. Prices of raw carpet wool have run about the same as in 1969. But production of all carpets has edged lower and competition from man-made fibers has remained keen. Use of carpet wool should gain next year if stronger demand due to economic growth materializes as expected. Prices of raw carpet wool probably will continue near this year, under pressure of relatively large world supplies. Wool fabric production the first half of 1970 dropped 16 percent from a year earlier. Yarn production for knitting the first 8 months declined 19 percent. L. Burrus of the Boston wool office of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. A few grades were moved at times in very good bulk, but taking the month as a whole, demand and prices were more or less un certain. On some grades, prices have declined moderately while on other grades they have remained fairly steady. The lack of a general demand and the easier prices in Australia at the Opening series of the new season have been factors contributing to the decline of the fine territory wools. Demand showed an expanding tendency during the last week in August and, on medium lines particularly. Prices showed a firm* er tendency.
