Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 13: Collected and Arranged The editor was a man of our times, animated by the Spirit of the age, and a firm believer in our glorious nineteenth century. The greatest objection, Father, said he one day to the priest, as soon learned he was, to the church, is her unprogressive character. She fails to keep religion up with the times, refuses to advance with modern society, and the world goes on without her. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes a Brownson, Vol. 7: Collected and Arranged Dr. Bushnell is the pastor of a Congregational parish in Hartford, Connecticut, professing what are called in New England "Orthodox" doctrines. He has produced considerable excitement for the last five or six years, and is just now one of our principal "lions." He is certainly not without influence, and we are assured that he carries with him a large portion of his own denomination, and is followed, it is said, by the larger part of the younger Congregational ministers. The New Englander, the organ of the New Haven school, accepts his views, and Andover, we are told, adopts them as explicitly as it can, without forfeiting its funds. The indications now are, that the Bushnellites will either divide the Congregational body into two sects of nearly equal strength, or that they will leaven the whole lump with their peculiar views, change essentially the character of New Eng land theology, and virtually obliterate the last traces of New England Calvinism. Such are the indications; but what the result will actually prove to be, we by no means venture to predict, - though the latter alternative seems to us the more probable. We have discovered little that is new in Dr. Bushnell's views, - little with which we were not in former years perfectly familiar, or which has not had for a long time a large number of adherents both at home and abroad. He is evidently dissatisfied with all the recognized forms of Protestantism, and desirous of hitting upon something which shall dissolve and recombine them all in a new and far more comprehensive form, or rather no-form, in which all men shall unite, however divided and mutually hostile they may be in their mere doctrinal statements. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 14: Collected and Arranged Our readers do not need to be informed that the distinguished author of this work on the development of Christian doctrine, has, within the last year, been admitted to the communion of the holy Catholic Church; for who has not heard of the event, and what Catholic heart has it not filled with devout joy and gratitude? Mr. Newman has stood for several years before the public as a man of rare gifts and acquirements; he was at the head of a very influential party in the Anglican communion, and appears to have enjoyed a personal esteem, and exerted a personal influence, which seldom fall to the lot of any but the master minds of their age or country. We may well, then, look upon his conversion with more than ordinary gratitude to the great Head of the church, and as an event of more than ordinary significance. Mr. Newman appears, from all we know of his history, to have commenced his career with sincere attachment to the schismatical communion in which he was born and reared, and to have felt that he owed it all his genius, talents, attainments, labors, and affections; but almost from the first it was seen by close observers that he cherished aspirations and tendencies which, if faithfully followed, must ultimately lead him out of that communion, or destroy the communion itself by absorbing it in the Catholic Church. Hence the great importance which has been attached to his movements, and the lively interest with which his various publications have been read. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 4: Collected and Arranged IT must not be inferred from my calling this little work New Views, that I profess to bring forward a new religion, or to have discovered a new Christianity. The religion Of the Bible I believe to be given by the inspiration of God, and the Christianity Of Christ satisfies my understanding and my heart. However widely I may dissent from the Christianity of the church, with that of Christ I am content to stand or fall, and I ask no higher glory than to live and die in it and for it. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 5: Collected and Arranged; Containing the Convert and the First Part of the Writings in Defence of the Church The volume here offered to the reading public IS no work of fiction, and the person who gives an account of himself is no imaginary person around whom I have chosen to weave passages from my own experience. The person who tells his story is myself, and I have aimed to tell my story, so far as it bears on my religious convictions and experience, with simplicity, frankness, and truthfulness. The book, whatever else it may or may not be, is an honest book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 2: Collected and Arranged It is not without some misgiving that I present the following essay to the public; not, indeed, because I have any lack of confidence in the soundness of its principles, or the combined analytical and synthetic pro cesses by which I attempt to demonstrate the existence of God, the fact of creation, providence, the moral law, and the ground of mans moral obligation to worship God; but from a consciousness of my inability to do justice to the great thesis I have undertaken to defend, and my dis trust of the disposition of the public to receive and read with patience what is most likely to be treated as a metaphysical disquisition, and therefore as worthless. Nobody now reads metaphysical works, or any works that pertain to the higher philosophy, and especially such as attempt to vindicate theology as the science of sciences. All I can say is, that my essay is not metaphysical in the ordinary acceptation of the term, docs not attempt to construct a science of abstractions, which arc null, and deals only with concretes, with realities. Some of the problems, and the analyses by which I attempt to solve them, may be regarded as abstruse, difficult, and foreign from the ordinary current of thought, as all such discussions must necessarily be; but I have done my best to make my statements and reasonings clear and distinct, plain and intelligible to men of ordinary understanding and intellectual culture. Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 3: Collected and Arranged I think that an important point was lost sight oi, - that is, the point of contact between the natural and the supernatural, which must exist, let the mediums and teachers of the supernatural be what and as many or as few as they may. This is an important point; and the capacity of the natural to apprehend, to contain, and to realize the supernatural is another. On these all the difficulties turn.' Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Orestes A. Brownson, Vol. 16: Collected and Arranged; Containing the Second Part of the Political Writings Our orators have invested the Fourth of July with so many disturbing associations, that our citizens are gradually becoming less and less disposed to greet its annual return with those festivities which it was the hope of our fathers would continue to mark it through all generations to come. Still, it is a day sacred in the affections of every American citizen, and it cannot come round without exciting lively emotions of gratitude and joy in every American heart. The birth of a nation is an event to be remembered, and the day on which it takes its rank in the family of independent nations is well deserving to be set apart by some service, at once joyous and solemn, recounting the glory which has been won, the blessings which have been received, and pointing to the high destiny and grave responsibilities to which the new people are called. The orations ordinarily given on our national anniversary are of that peculiar sort which it is said neither gods nor men can tolerate. They are tawdry and turgid, full of stale declamation about liberty, fulsome and disgusting glorification of ourselves as a people, or uncalled-for denunciations of those states and empires, that have not seen proper to adopt political institutions similar to our own. Yet we may, perhaps, be too fastidious in our taste, and too sweeping in our censures. Boys will be boys, and dulness will be dulness, and when either is installed orator of the day," the performance must needs be boyish or dull. But when the number of orations annually called forth by our national jubilee, from all sorts of persons, throughout the length and breadth of the land, is considered, we may rather wonder that so many are produced which do credit to their authors, and fall not far below the occasion, than that there are so few. All are not mere school-boy productions; all are not patriotism on tiptoe, nor eloquence on stilts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
