These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Wages of Virtue: Look inside the book: This East African shooting-trip with Lord Huntingten, Sir Montague, and Lady Merline, was affording him great entertainment, inasmuch as Huntingten had fallen in love with Lady Merline and did not know it. ...As he sat on the side of his bed that night, Captain Strong remarked unto his soul, 'Well--one thing--if I know Monty Merline as well as I think, 'Sir Montague Merline' died two years ago, whatever happens.... About Percival Christopher Wren, the Author: He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa, and its main sequels, Beau Sabreur and Beau Ideal (in fact the so-called 'trilogy' was extended in Good Gestes and Spanish Maine, so John Geste adventures feature in five books). ...The divorce was granted, and a letter by Isabel to Ronald Colman (who played Beau Geste in the silent film) in 1929 on behalf of her 'seriously ill' husband, suggests she and Wren had married at least as early as 1928 (actual date 03 Dec 1927).

Book Description
The Wages of Virtue is one of the early novels by P. C. Wren. Sir Montague Merline and his platoon get into a bloody combat in Africa and they are all massacred except for one man. Since her husband is presumed dead, Lady Merline remarries, but Montague emerges a couple of years later in some African village, with no memory. After finding out about his wife's new life, he decides not to ruin her happiness and goes off to join French Foreign Legion. The descriptions of Legion garrison life closely match those contained in the autobiographical In the Foreign Legion by ex-legionnaire Edwin Rosen._x000D_ Percival Christopher Wren (1875-1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion.

Book Description
Lord Huntingten emerged from his little green tent, and strolled over to where Captain Strong, of the Queen's African Rifles, sat in the "drawing-room." The drawing-room was the space under a cedar fir and was furnished with four Roorkee chairs of green canvas and white wood, and a waterproof ground-sheet. "I do wish the Merlines would roll up," he said. "I want my dinner." "Not dinner time yet," remarked Captain Strong. "Hungry?" "No," answered Lord Huntingten almost snappishly. Captain Strong smiled. How old Reggie Huntingten always gave himself away! It was the safe return of Lady Merline that he wanted.

Book Description
"…it is not the object of this book to ask anything of you, but to tell you that salvation is all of grace, which means, free, gratis, for nothing." C.H. Spurgeon is best known for his reasonalble and rational sermons and teachings. He preached to thousands in England during the 1800s; many times in contradiction to the established church beliefs. All of Grace insights include: The salvation of God is for those who do not deserve it. Faith is the work of God's grace in us. Forgiveness leads to repentance. If you look to Christ for your beginnings, beware of looking to yourself for your endings. The life of your soul lies in faith; its health lies in love. Common and vivid illustrations such as limpets at the seaside, a cup by the fountain, and fighting a swarm of flies with a sword characterizes the simple yet eternal truths of the gospel as shared by C.H. Spurgeon, a Reformed Baptist preacher. Always humbly directing the focus on the God of all grace, the author beckons his readers to accept salvation as the free and for nothing promise from a faithful heavenly Father of love.

Book Description
Highly controversial when it was first published in 1981, Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue has since established itself as a landmark work in contemporary moral philosophy. In this book, MacIntyre sought to address a crisis in moral language that he traced back to a European Enlightenment that had made the formulation of moral principles increasingly difficult. In the search for a way out of this impasse, MacIntyre returns to an earlier strand of ethical thinking, that of Aristotle, who emphasised the importance of 'virtue' to the ethical life. More than thirty years after its original publication, After Virtue remains a work that is impossible to ignore for anyone interested in our understanding of ethics and morality today.

Book Description
Responsibility. Courage. Compassion. Honesty. Friendship. Persistence. Faith. Everyone recognizes these traits as essentials of good character. In order for our children to develop such traits, we have to offer them examples of good and bad, right and wrong. And the best places to find them are in great works of literature and exemplary stories from history. William J. Bennett has collected hundreds of stories in The Book of Virtues, an instructive and inspiring anthology that will help children understand and develop character -- and help adults teach them. From the Bible to American history, from Greek mythology to English poetry, from fairy tales to modern fiction, these stories are a rich mine of moral literacy, a reliable moral reference point that will help anchor our children and ourselves in our culture, our history, and our traditions -- the sources of the ideals by which we wish to live our lives. Complete with instructive introductions and notes, The Book of Virtues is a book the whole family can read and enjoy -- and learn from -- together.
