Book Description
For seventy-one years, iron ore was mined at Wabana, Bell Island: half the output was used in Canada; the other half was shipped around the world. When the mine shut down on June 30, 1966, it was Canada's oldest, continuously operating iron mine. The miners worked three miles under the ocean in Conception Bay, in what was, during its lifetime, the world's most extensive submarine iron mine. This is the story of the miners, of their workday, of the conditions in the mines, the story of the horses and the rats, of the fun that relieved the tedium and of the tragedies.

Book Description
When Matt McCarty travels five thousand miles to Newfoundland, his only intention is to put the ghosts of his past to rest along with his estranged, recently deceased alcoholic father. Instead, he will be drawn into danger and the adventure of a lifetime, unknowingly continuing the taciturn mystery man’s unfinished, clandestine wartime mission from 1942. U-boats have already torpedoed shipping within sight of Bell Island’s shore, but now, seventy-five years later, something terrible left behind by the enemy threatens a cataclysm that could destroy the peaceful existence of everyone in Conception Bay. As father and son’s stories weave back and forth in time, the present will collide with the past as Matt discovers both beautiful and deadly secrets above and deep below in the long abandoned iron ore mines of Bell Island.

Book Description
Excerpt from Iron Ore Mines at Wabana, Newfoundland, of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co. Limited Bell Island's clifis rise perpendicularly for several hundred feet and in many cases they overhang, the incessant ravages of the sea hav ing worn away the base. Geologists assert that the island is a remnant of an immense syncline or trough of sediments deposited in Cambrian times. The general outline of Conception Bay was then the same as now but larger. It is supposed that it was the estuary of a large river that flowed down from the higher land to the west, and a series of ripple marks found on the island strengthens this belief. Enormous quanti ties of sediment were evidently carried into the estuary, and the bay began to fill up. There was a continual readjustment of pressure and eventually this whole portion of Newfoundland was gradually lifted above sea level. Book Description
The history of Bell Island, Newfoundland, is an amazing one of a strong and courageous people who overcame the challenge of creating a community exposed to the mighty North Atlantic Ocean. Bell Island: Dawn of First Light covers the first permanent European settlers who were attracted to the rich soil of the island and to the fish in the surrounding waters. It outlines the accidental discovery of iron ore, the growth of the mining operations to become the largest submarine mine in the Commonwealth, labour unrest and the formation of a union, the factors that led to the mine's closure, and the tragic impact this would have on the residents. This is also the story of the equally determined women who fashioned the family home in both good and bad economic times. The mission of this Historic series is to bring to light the ageless character of Newfoundland and Labrador communities in an effort to preserve the history of this province and to educate future generations about this corner of the global village. Bell Island: Dawn of First Light is the second instalment in this series.

Book Description
"Company towns have shaped Canadian culture, but many of such communities have undergone radical transitions to an uncertain post-industrial future. How are these communities dealing with their historic landscapes--especially the residential neighbourhoods threatened by neglect or gentrification, places that some would prefer to forget, others to romanticize, and still others to understand and to re-use. There is much more work to do than put up plaques or pass designation by-laws. There are complex social and financial realities to consider. This book explores what happens, or sometimes what does not happen, when residents and policy-makers try to conserve the fabric or vestiges of communities whose economies have collapsed or places that have been forced to make a major transition to stay alive. But the ability to make a transition has a great deal to do with the DNA of a place. What were its founding moments? What were the early institutions and organizations that forged a spirit of place? How have these shaped the character of the community and made it more or less entrepreneurial when faced with the sometimes urgent need to re-orient the local economy and find new vocations for places. These sorts of economic and social considerations are seeping into the consciousness of those who work on and champion heritage conservation in Canada, and they are the subject of this collection of essays from academics and practitioners widely engaged in a variety of projects hoping to redefine the company town."--
