Understanding how the visible matter in the universe arises from its elementary quark andgluon constituents is a central question for science. The visible world is founded on the proton, the only composite building block of matter that is stable in nature. Consequently, understanding the formation of matter relies on explaining the dynamics and the properties of the proton's bound state. A fundamental property of the proton involves the system's response to an external electromagnetic (EM) field. It is characterized by the EM polarizabilities that describe how easily the charge and magnetization distributions inside the system are distorted by the EM field. When the polarizabilities are generalized to finite momentum transfer, their Fourier transform can map out the spatial distribution of the polarization densities in a proton subject to an EM field. This thesis focuses on the measurement of the proton generalized polarizabilities (GPs) at low four-momentum transfer in experimental Hall C at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF). Among the six independent GPs, we will focus on the electric (aE1) and the magnetic (bM1) scalar GPs. The GPs can be accessed through measurements of the Virtual Compton Scattering reaction, by replacing the incoming real photon of the Compton scattering process with a space-like virtual photon. The outgoing real photon provides the EM perturbation to the system. In addition, the Dispersion Relation Formalism is used for generalized polarizability extraction. In this work, the two scalar GPs measured with unprecedented precision, and the measurements help explore a momentum transfer region where an anomalous enhancement of the electric GP that contradicts the predictions of nuclear theory has been observed.

The conference NSTAR 2000 was part of a series of conferences and workshops that began in New York in 1988. Since then, the field of excited nucleons and hadron structure has developed enormously, and the scope has broadened. Most significantly, new experimental facilities have come into operation, allowing precise measurements of resonance couplings and transition form factors. The search for ?missing? quark model states and gluonic excitations in complex hadronic channels is now possible.On the theory side, new and promising developments have emerged: quark models with meson degrees of freedom, hybrid baryon models, and studies of baryons in the limit of many colors. Exotic mesons, particles that have quantum numbers that are inaccessible to conventional quark-model mesons, are predicted by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), but past experiments seeking to identify exotic candidates have produced controversial results. The HyCLAS experiment (E04005) at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) proposes the use of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B to study the photoproduction of exotic mesons. However, the base detector package at CLAS is not ideal for observing and measuring neutral particles, particularly at forward angles. The Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) experiment at TJNAF has commissioned a new calorimeter for detecting small-angle photons, but studies must be performed to determine its suitability for a meson spectroscopy experiment. The [eta][pi] system has been under especial scrutiny in the community as a source for potential exotics, so the new calorimeter's ability at reconstructing these resonances must be evaluated. To achieve this, the invariant mass of showers in the calorimeter are reconstructed. Also, two electroproduction reaction channels analogous to photoproduction channels of interest to HyCLAS are examined in DVCS data. It is found that, while not ideal, the new calorimeter will allow access to additional reaction channels, and its inclusion in HyCLAS is warranted. Results in basic shower reconstruction show that the calorimeter has good effi ciency in resolving [pi]° decays, but its [eta] reconstruction is not as strong. When examining ep → ep[pi]°[eta], preliminary reconstruction of the [eta][pi]° system shows faint signals in the a0(980) region. In the ep → e n [pi]+ [eta] channel, preliminary reconstruction of the [eta][pi]+ system gave good signals in the a0(980) and a2(1320) regions, but statistics were poor. While more analyses are necessary to improve statistics and remove background, these preliminary results support the claim that the DVCS calorimeter will be a valuable addition to CLAS for upcoming exotic meson searches in photoproduction.
