Throssell was severely wounded during the Battle of Hill 60, but refused to leave his post until the fighting was over. After the war, Throssell became an outspoken opponent of war, for which he was widely condemned. It also made employment difficult and he fell into debt. When he tried to pawn his Victoria Cross, he was offered only ten shillings. He committed suicide at forty-nine.
