However Brown misjudges the impact of the war chief Kamohomoho, uncle to the king, and one of the few Hawaiian chiefs of the time who understands the Englishman's mind set. Having fought a month long battle with his brother, Kamohomoho first maneuvers Brown into providing aid in the war, and when the battle is finally won, into an implicit statement of loyalty to the Oahu King. In due course Brown is called upon to demonstrate his loyalty, and when he waivers his plans are doomed. Adding to the intrigue is the arrival in Honolulu harbor of the American vessel, Lady Washington. Her captain, John Kendrick, is no fan of the Englishman Brown and his intrigues and threatens their success. Also on board the Lady is a Hawaiian passenger, a young man known to both the crews of the Lady and the Jackal. Kavaialii, a descendant of Oahu royalty, has sailed to China with the Chief Kaiana, and on his return again found refuge in the service of Kaiana, now allied with Kamehameha on Hawaii. Kavaialii has come to Oahu on the order of Kamehameha to gather intelligence on Kalanikupule's forces and armament, and to seek out Brown's rumored agreements with Kahekili. As the Oahu war ends, the fear of Kamehameha's invasion reignites among the Maui chiefs, and intrigue, murder, and plots form and unfold. The chaos of fear and uncertainty causes Kamohomoho to wonder if his brother, the dead King Kahekili, has not indeed cursed Oahu by seeking vengeance for past transgressions through curses against his own family and the people of Oahu. Few regions of the United States can equal the high concentration of endangered ancient cultural sites found in Hawaii. Built by the indigenous people of the Islands, the sites range in age from two thousand to two hundred years old and in size and extent from large temple complexes serving the highest order of chiefs to modest family shrines. Today, many of these structures are threatened by their proximity to urban development. Sites are frequently vandalized or, worse, bulldozed to make way for hotels, golf courses, marinas, and other projects. The sixty heiau photographed and described in this volume are all located on Oahu, the island that has experienced by far the most development over the last two hundred years. These captivating images provide a compelling argument for the preservation of Hawaiian sacred places. The modest sites of the maka‘ainana (commoners) - small fishing, agricultural, craft, and family shrines - are given particular attention because they are often difficult to recognize and prone to vandalism and neglect. Also included are the portraits of twenty-eight Hawaiians who shared their knowledge with archaeologist J. Gilbert McAllister during his survey of Oahu in the 1930s. Without their contribution, the names and histories of many of the heiau would have been lost. In How Chiefs Became Kings, Patrick Vinton Kirch addresses a central problem in anthropological archaeology: the emergence of “archaic states” whose distinctive feature was divine kingship. Kirch takes as his focus the Hawaiian archipelago, commonly regarded as the archetype of a complex chiefdom. Integrating anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, traditional history, and theory, and drawing on significant contributions from his own four decades of research, Kirch argues that Hawaiian polities had become states before the time of Captain Cook’s voyage (1778-1779). The status of most archaic states is inferred from the archaeological record.
