Book Description
Excerpt from The Unitarian Advocate, Vol. 1 Happily for the Unitarian, his peculiar views Of Christ ianity do not forbid, but require him to manifest the kindest regard for other denominations, and leave him at full liberty to do justice to piety wherever it is found, and however associated with erroneous opinions. Some who stand Opposed to us in creed have seen fit to brand us with harsh epithets for our creed's sake, and to class Unitarians with Pagans, Mahometans, Deists, the enemies Of the gospel. They strike at what is most dear to us, our christian name, and disavow, not only all our preten sions to a correct faith, (which is very tolerable) but even the most sincere claims to a pious character, which to an honest man who is conscious that he fears God from the heart, must be hard to be borne. Let not the Unitarian retaliate in kind. Let us be scrupulous, in our judgments of their character, not to overlook any fair proofs of goodness, nor too eagerly to catch at any signs of what is evil. We have no ends to answer by-auch retorts as a hasty temper might cause an injured party to resort to. Let us the more cautiously guard against these, as they would, more than any thing else, hinder the success Of every effort to convince our brethren of their fault in thus dealing with ourselves. The truths we bold are fast prevailing by their own light and power. God forbid we should employ other means than those which the spirit Of our holy master warrants, to advance them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Unitarian Advocate, Vol. 4: From July to December, 1829 WE are apt, I fear, to let the long period which has elapsed since our blessed Lord's residence on earth have a separating and distancing influence upon our feelings towards him. It is almost inevitable, indeed, that this circumstance should produce something of this effect. It is not possible for us to have the same intensity of interest in the Saviour personally, - to feel ourselves brought so near to him, as, almost without effort, we should, if we had shared his society, had sat and listened to his heavenly instructions, his faithful reproofs, his affectionate expressions of sympathy and attachment. What a'privilege his immediate disciples must have had in being able to take their places near to him, -ofl'er him the most delicate offices of kindness, and have them received as pleasing to him -to have him, whom they revered so much, willing to associate them with him in his great labors and sufl'erings, -to have him call them his friends and remember them in his prayers. Certainly these were circumstances which must have kindled in their breasts such a flame of love for their divine Master. Book Description
Excerpt from The Unitarian, Vol. 1: January 1, 1834 Meantime, we commend our journal to the favour of the public, hoping for indulgence to its faults, and praying God that it may be made an instrument of good in our hands, in its humble sphere, a light to the church, a herald of the gospel as it is in Christ Jesus, a means of redemption to many from the sad gloom of false views of religion, on the one hand, from the fearful, and, as it would seem, the wide yawning gulf of infidelity, on the other. Book Description
Excerpt from The Unitarian Review and Religious Magazine, 1874, Vol. 1 Deeper than that class of facts to which I have alluded, lies the sense of sympathy with the lives and actions of others, however far we may be from the ability to reproduce them. This relation Emerson has happily expressed in the opening paragraph of his essay on history. Though the words are fortunately familiar, they are so apt to our present needs that I will quote them: There is one mind, common to all individual men. Every man is an inlet12 Mysticism. [mar. Book Description
Excerpt from The Pacific Unitarian, Vol. 18: November, 1909 to October, 1910 An earnest contributor to the Pacific Methodist Advocate, after a few words of introduction about Dr. Eliot's New Religion, says: How very strange that a thing called man should in this year of our Lord attempt to dethrone the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and rob him of the 'glory he had before the world was.' I think, as this is a day of prayer for the conversion of the world, a day should be set apart for a change in Eliot's heart and the change of every one who dares to endorse his bold infidel and arrogant views, or to take them out of this world. The Lord have mercy on such an old educated sinner and all who endorse him in whole or in part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Universalist, Vol. 1 Our church of England friend reciprocated our sentiment and lamented, as we do, the narrowing influence thus exerted over the heart, an influence which is one of the first fruits of such divisions. We were right in our conjecture, that the title of our magazine was a designation our worthy friend had never thought of in connection with religion and theology; and, when we frankly told him we were Universalists, he looked thoughtful and exclaimed, I like that term 1 Not that it conveyed to him all that we associate with it; but by it were suggested principles in which his Christian charity and generous spirit fully sympathized - principles which, in their proper development and final results, embody our highest aspirations, and confirm our most holy faith. To maintain, on the one hand, that we are not the advocates of party - that our object is unsectarian; and to assert, on the other, a distinct individuality by the assumption of an appellative which must dis tinguish us from any and all ecclesiastical bodies, may appear somewhat paradoxical. We observe, and we are anxious to be understood, that since a magazine, such as that with whose interests we have the-honor to be identified, must have a name to distinguish it from others of the same species, just as the writer must have a name to distinguish himfrom other men, that name was adopted which should most honestly, and most accurately express or suggest the principles we designed to advocate. And, so far from proposing to ourselves another addition to those ecclesiastical bodies, of which, as such, the New Testament knows nothing whatever, and to which we believe the Scriptures to be opposed, we have been anxious, and take this opportunity seriously to protest, against any such design. And it is a satisfaction to us to know, that, among our contributors and subscribers, there are members of various communities - Christians of different denominations. Our great object is sufficiently made known in the pages Of the volume which we now have the pleasure to present to our readers. And we verily believe, that the errors which we oppose are as much the cause and fuel of those divisions which disgrace the Christian world, as the truths for which it is our privilege to contend are antagonistic to the spirit of sectarianism and party. Book Description
Excerpt from The Unitarian, 1895, Vol. 10 If there is anything which hitherto has been regarded as indisputably the supreme factor in human progress, the distinguish ing characteristic of man over the lower animals, and the department of our being on whose evolution nature is now coneen trating all its energies, it is his intellectual endowment. Literature is forever singing the praises of man's lordly mind and godlike reason. The whole immense dis tance between civilization and savagery is supposed to be due to the difference there is between their natural mental gifts. And, while the Church is regarded as a valuable help in keeping a person, after he has been trained up, from going to the had, our courses of study in school and college, and our taxes and enthusiasm for popular edu cation, are based almost entirely on the idea that the foremost requisite for making a boy a good citizen and a valuable member of society is to make him a good scholar.
