Book Description
Normandy, Flanders Field and other overseas cemeteries of the American Battle Monument Commission (ABMC) are well known. However, lesser-known burial sites of American war dead exist all over the world—in Australia and across the Pacific Rim, in Canada and Mexico, Libya and Spain, most of Europe and as far north as the Russian Arctic. This is the history of American soldiers buried abroad since the American Revolution. It traces the evolution of American attitudes and practices about war dead and provides the names and locations of those still buried abroad in non–ABMC locations.

Book Description
In the aftermath of the First World War, countries mourned their fallen sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers. In 1920, in both France and England, memorials were erected to those lost heroes who had remained anonymous. Around the world other countries followed suit, each country creating it's own version of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Now, award-winning author Linda Granfield presents her own tribute to these fallen soldiers. Taking readers on a journey to the Tombs in more than a dozen countries, Ms. Granfield shares over 100 photos and images that ultimately reveal a timeless lesson: this November and every November we must remember those who served -- both known and unknown.

Book Description
. This is a story about the Great War. It is 1922 and Lieutenant James Cooper is responsible for some of the work to rebury the war dead. One soldier is chosen by the British Government to become the Unknown Warrior as a tribute to the unidentified soldiers lying on the battlefields, but after the burial Cooper finds out that a silver cigarette case was discovered on the body which was later laid to rest in Westminster Abbey, England. Cooper, who becomes a journalist is obsessed with discovering the soldier's identity. Inside the cigarette case he finds the photograph of a beautiful women, her name scrawled on the back; the address of a photographer's shop, and inside a secret compartment in the case an elaborate enameling of two women painted as warriors. As Cooper uncovers more about the family of the Unknown Warrior he tried to face up to his own fears of rejection after the war. Many of the historical events in between 1900 to 1920 are used as a backdrop to the story: the suffragette campaign, votes for women, industrial strikes, and the treatment of conscientious objectors in the Great War.. Cooper goes to British authorities and tells them about the cigarette case found on the Unknown Warrior but his Colonel advises him to destroy the case and say nothing about events of its discovery. But Cooper continues to find about the people associated with the cigarette case and tries to answer the question: Who is the Unknown Soldier? He is determined to know the truth about this man, find out about his family, and how he came to die on the battlefield. To do this Cooper has to find a way of coping with his own problems:- the fear of rejection because of disfigurement arising from his war wounds, loneliness, and lack of confidence. He discovers some of the owners and keepers of the cigarette case: an enameller who makes the case and models the pictures inside it on Vienna prostitutes, an American theatre owner, a musician and tap dancer, and a soldier fighting in northern France. We are kept guessing about the identity of the Unknown Warrior. We read how the main characters in the story fall out and in love, perish or survive. The events and exciting conclusion to the story make it a page turner. Historical accuracy, vivid description, and strong characterisation makes this story moving and realistic. The plot moves from Vienna, Britain, the United States, and the battlefields of France and describes the personal tragedies brought about by the Great War 1914 - 1918, and the courage and resilience of survivors of the conflict.

Book Description
The Unknown Warriors is based on a true story set in the beauty and tragedy of Europe in the years just before the Second World War. Abrienda de Soza, inheritor of a fortune stolen from the coffers of Imperial Russia during the last days of the Russian Civil War, fights to keep her country out of the hands of both Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia and preserve a culture threatened by both through any means possible. Nika Molnar, an agent working for Hungarian Intelligence’s Special Unit, seeks to exact vengeance on the man who murdered her father when she was a child. Impeccably researched, The Unknown Warriors captures the feel and nuance of a world soon to be destroyed forever—a uniquely told and deeply compelling story of war, intrigue and betrayal, but also of love and sacrifice played out against the backdrop of a world heading inexorably towards war. The title is taken from a speech by Winston Churchill. “This is a War of Unknown Warriors, but let all strive without failing in faith or duty...”
