Excerpt from The Times Register of Events in 1882 The Parliamentary Session 'of1882 will be memorable, not for the amount of legislative work accomplished, nor for the completion of any critical changes. In the polity or balance of parties in England, but for its strange vicissitudes and an almost unexampled succession of surprises. There have been not a few' Sessions as barren and disappointing, and some, perhaps, as destitute of continuous and characteristic interest, but oi mine other, we believe, could it be' said with truth that at no single point in it was it possible for the most far-seeing speculator' upon public affairs toihave hit upon by con jacture the actual centre of'politi'cal movement six weeks'or two months later. Twelve months ago, when Parliament was prorogued after two Sessions of absorbing and exciting controversy over Irish afiairs, it was hoped that Ireland would 'no longer stop the way, and that the business of England and Scotland would receive a proper share of attention in 1882. Domestic legislation, it was anticipated, was destined at last to command. The interest monopolized since 1876 by foreign affairs or Irish agitation. The Speech from the Throne reflected these hopeful ideas. Though the. Egyptian troubles had begun to loom large on the Eastern horizon, it was possible to congratulate the country on the' pacific settlement of disputes between'turkey and the Powers; On the N orth-west frontier of India and in South Africa England. Was at peace with her former foes. Th'bugh-the negotiations for the renewal of the' Commercial Treaty with France hadnot been concluded, the prospect of. Success was not abandoned. The state of Ireland was said to be improving; the Protection Act had been vigorously enforced, and Parliament was cheered with the hope - strangely at variance with the policy of the Government a few weeks later4 - that' perseverance in t'hei'oourse pursued would be.
