Book Description
A unique and detailed account of all important relations in the analytic theory of determinants, from the classical work of Laplace, Cauchy and Jacobi to the latest 20th century developments. The first five chapters are purely mathematical in nature and make extensive use of the column vector notation and scaled cofactors. They contain a number of important relations involving derivatives which prove beyond a doubt that the theory of determinants has emerged from the confines of classical algebra into the brighter world of analysis. Chapter 6 is devoted to the verifications of the known determinantal solutions of several nonlinear equations which arise in three branches of mathematical physics, namely lattice, soliton and relativity theory. The solutions are verified by applying theorems established in earlier chapters, and the book ends with an extensive bibliography and index. Several contributions have never been published before. Indispensable for mathematicians, physicists and engineers wishing to become acquainted with this topic.

Excerpt from The Theory of Determinants: And Their Applications The most natural way of introducing the subject is to consider a few Simple cases of the problem to which the invention of deter minants is due; namely, the formal solution of a general system of simultaneous linear equations. Book Description
This book is dedicated to a theory of traces and determinants on embedded algebras of linear operators, where the trace and determinant are extended from finite rank operators by a limit process. The self-contained material should appeal to a wide group of mathematicians and engineers, and is suitable for teaching.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Theory of Determinants: And Their Applications In the present treatise I have attempted to give an exposition of the Theory of Determinants and their more important applications. In every case where it was possible I have consulted the original works and memoirs on the subject; a list of those I have been able to see is appended as it may be useful to others pursuing the same line of study. At one time I hoped to make this list exhaustive, supplementing my own researches from the literary notices in foreign mathematical journals, but even with this aid I found that it would be necessarily incomplete. In consequence of this the list has been restricted to those memoirs which I have seen, the leading results of which are incorporated either in the body of the text or in the examples. The principal novelty of the treatise lies in the systematic use of Grassmann's alternate units, by means of which the study of determinants is, I believe, much simplified. I have to thank my friend Mr Jas. Barnard, M.A. of St John's College and Mathematical Master at the Proprietary School, Blackheath, for the care he has bestowed on correcting the proofs and for many valuable suggestions.
