The bimetallic cluster PtRu5(CO)13(PBut 3)(mu3-PhC2H)(mu5-C), 2.1 has been shown to be a catalyst precursor for the hydrogenation of PhC2H to styrene and ethylbenzene. Three new organometallic products, Ru5(CO)12(mu5-C)[PtPBu t3](mu3-PhC2H)(mu-H)2, 2.4, Pt(PBut3) (PhC2H)(CO), 2.5 and Ru5(CO) 11(mu4-CCHCPh)(mu3-PhC2H) 2, 2.6 have been found in the catalyst solutions. Compounds 2.4--2.6 were also tested independently for their ability to catalyze the hydrogenation of PhC2H.
