Gustaf Berglund is representative of the many pioneer pastors who bore their crosses in sacrificial service to their struggling young congregations and their newly-adopted country. How was the church different in the 19th century? What was required of its pastors and their families? What has remained unchanged across the generations? Finally, what lessons can we learn from the experiences of Berglund and other pastors like him? They were true spiritual veterans who served their country by providing a moral compass for America in its formative years, and providing nourishment for the faith of those who settled the New World.
