The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven
Author: Nathaniel Ian Miller
Publisher: Little, Brown
ISBN: 0316592560
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
In this "briskly entertaining" (New York Times Book Review), "transporting and wholly original" (People Magazine) novel, one man banishes himself to a solitary life in the Arctic Circle, and is saved by good friends, a loyal dog, and a surprise visit that changes everything. In 1916, Sven Ormson leaves a restless life in Stockholm to seek adventure in Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago where darkness reigns four months of the year and he might witness the splendor of the Northern Lights one night and be attacked by a polar bear the next. But his time as a miner ends when an avalanche nearly kills him, leaving him disfigured, and Sven flees even further, to an uninhabited fjord. There, with the company of a loyal dog, he builds a hut and lives alone, testing himself against the elements. The teachings of a Finnish fur trapper, along with encouraging letters from his family and a Scottish geologist who befriended him in the mining camp, get him through his first winter. Years into his routine isolation, the arrival of an unlikely visitor salves his loneliness, sparking a chain of surprising events that will bring Sven into a family of fellow castoffs and determine the course of the rest of his life. Written with wry humor and in prose as breathtaking as the stark landscape it evokes, The Memoirs of Stockholm Sven is a testament to the strength of our human bonds, reminding us that even in the most inhospitable conditions on the planet, we are not beyond the reach of love. #1 Indie Next Pick Finalist for the Vermont Book Award Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize

Dispute Over the Applicable Scope of the Svalbard Treaty
Author: Tianbao Qin
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 27
Book Description
As the Arctic is increasingly becoming one of the focus of international strategy, the Svalbard Treaty -- one of the few international intergovernmental treaties in the Arctic area -- has been getting more and more attention. Disputes over The Svalbard Treaty focus on the determination of its applicable scope, while the core of the dispute lies in how to understand the meaning of 'territorial waters' in the treaty. This paper, from China's perspective, combining with two ideas of legal interpretation -subjective theory and objective theory, uses the methods of evolutionary interpretation, historical analysis and "rational contracting parties" analysis to arrival at a conclusion as following: the Svalbard Treaty shall apply to Svalbard's fishery protection zone and continental shelf, and other contracting parties shall enjoy the non-discrimination rights given by the treaty in these two areas.

Arctic Matters
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309371619
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 37
Book Description
Viewed in satellite images as a jagged white coat draped over the top of the globe, the high Arctic appears distant and isolated. But even if you don't live there, don't do business there, and will never travel there, you are closer to the Arctic than you think. Arctic Matters: The Global Connection to Changes in the Arctic is a new educational resource produced by the Polar Research Board of the National Research Council (NRC). It draws upon a large collection of peer-reviewed NRC reports and other national and international reports to provide a brief, reader-friendly primer on the complex ways in which the changes currently affecting the Arctic and its diverse people, resources, and environment can, in turn, affect the entire globe. Topics in the booklet include how climate changes currently underway in the Arctic are a driver for global sea-level rise, offer new prospects for natural resource extraction, and have rippling effects through the world's weather, climate, food supply and economy.

The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions

ISBN: 1108627951
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 976
Book Description
The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions is a landmark collection drawing together the history of the Arctic and Antarctica from the earliest times to the present. Structured as a series of thematic chapters, an international team of scholars offer a range of perspectives from environmental history, the history of science and exploration, cultural history, and the more traditional approaches of political, social, economic, and imperial history. The volume considers the centrality of Indigenous experience and the urgent need to build action in the present on a thorough understanding of the past. Using historical research based on methods ranging from archives and print culture to archaeology and oral histories, these essays provide fresh analyses of the discovery of Antarctica, the disappearance of Sir John Franklin, the fate of the Norse colony in Greenland, the origins of the Antarctic Treaty, and much more. This is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of our planet.
