Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Zulus The writing of this book was brought about rather by the influence of the authors circumstances than by any aspiration or desire on his part to appear before the public in the character of a writer. During his childhood, which was spent in Natal, one of the chief topics of conversation there, of both the black and the white races, was the Zulus. His mind was filled with thrilling tales of what they had done and were doing, all rendered the more romantic by a surrounding element of haze. In after years, when he chanced to be closely associated with the people and the affairs of their country, he was led by a natural process to inquire into the actual facts. The task was one to which it was necessary to devote a good deal of time and patience. There were many Zulus living who possessed the information which was required, but, scattered as they were over a wide extent of country, there was difficulty, first in learning of and then in meeting them. Eventually, however, the material was got together which was embodied in the first edition. It was hoped, amongst other things, that publication would call forth criticism of a kind which would help in rendering the work more perfect, but this hope was not realised. Those who read the book were disposed rather to regard it as authoritative, and to say kind things about it. The whole responsibility in the matter thus remained with the author, and he has felt it to be his duty, after the lapse of some years, to reprint it in a revised and extended form. Book Description
Excerpt from Forty Years Among the Zulus It is good to observe a people through the eyes of one who has long lived among them and for them. The unselfish soul is the best observer. He sees truthfully who sees the good, that he may enlarge it; the evil, that he may cure it. For a study of races, the devotion of love is the light of wisdom. For this reason the observations and reflections of this book will have a just and permanent value. The heroes of the Dark Continent" are not all named in the records of explorations and discoveries. The worth and courage of the missionary, who, by his fidelity in preaching and living the gospel, discovers the man in the savage, are less conspicuous but no less real. England may trace many streams of her power to the fountains that were opened by the teachers and preachers of Jesus when her ancestors were pagans. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Zulu Campaign Some apology or explanation may be deemed requi site, for delaying the publication of this Story of the Zulu War for more than a year after its conclusion. The little book itself was written very shortly after the capture of the king, Cetywayo, and the tardiness of its appearance has been, to a certain extent, intentional on my part. Book Description
Excerpt from Nursery Tales, Traditions, and Histories of the Zulus, in Their Own Words, Vol. 1: With a Translation Into English The students' edition: the student whether of the Zulu language, or of Comparative Folk-lore. There are therefore some things retained in it which are not fit for the public generally but which could not for the student be properly suppressed. The very value of such a work depends on the fidelity with which all is told. To be a trust worthy exposition of the native mind it must exhibit every side of it. I have felt what so many other collectors of such legends among other people have felt before me, that I have had a trust committed to me, and that I can only faithfully execute it by laying every thing before others. But it would be quite easy to prepare a popular edition, which with a few alterations in the tales, and a condensation and modification of the phraseology, might become an interesting and not uninstructive book for the people generally and especially for the young, with whom it would become as cherished a favourite as any which is found in nursery literature. This must be my apology for the many imperfections which will be found in it the absence of order, and occasional repetitions. I have been feeling my way all along and have discovered that there exists among the people a vast store of interesting traditional tales, which may yet be col lected 5 and it is possible that I have only just learnt the way of col leeting them. I have already several of considerable interest, which will appear, it is supposed, in a Second Volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
In 1879, armed only with their spears, their rawhide shields, and their incredible courage, the Zulus challenged the might of Victorian England and, initially, inflicted on the British the worst defeat a modern army has ever suffered at the hands of men without guns. This is the definitive account of the rise of the Zulu nation under the great ruler Shaka and its fall under Cetshwayo. The story is studded with tales of drama and heroism: the Battle of Isandhlwana, where the Zulu army wiped out the major British column; and Rorke's Drift, where a handful of British troops beat off thousands of Zulu warriors and won eleven Victoria Crosses. Acclaimed for its scholarship, its monumental range, and its spellbinding readability, The Washing of the Spears is a gripping portrait of not just the Zulu War of 1879, but also of Britain’s colonial policy at this moment.

Book Description
Excerpt from Among the Zulus: The Adventures of Hans Sterk, South African Hunter and Pioneer Nearly twenty-five years have elapsed since the following pages were written, and events have since then transpired in South Africa, which have verified the accuracy of the statements made in this book. The courage and skill of the Zulus have been proved to our cost, and had those who managed affairs in the Zulu war been better acquainted with the sotermed savages to whom they were opposed, they would not have committed the fatal error of underrating the enemy, or of imagining that to lager the waggons, and to take every precaution against a rush of overwhelming numbers, was an indication of cowardice. The Boers with whom my experience was gained are fairly described in these pages, and were of the same class, as those who ascended Majuba Hill. When in Nova Scotia before the Boer war, I was laughed at by more than one officer, when I stated that the Boer was a formidable enemy who must be dealt with cautiously. I was assured that a corporal's guard would cause all the Boers in the country to ride or run away. Knowing this to be the opinion of many officers high in authority, it was not very difficult to prophecy the disasters that occurred. This book is merely a tale, but I have endeavoured to describe with accuracy certain historical events, and also to give a correct idea of the Zulu, and Boer, as I found them. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Zulu War and Its Origin The general plan of my history was laid out, and the first few chapters were written, during the voyage from Natal, and upon reaching England I obtained the assistance of my friend Lieut.-Colonel Edward Durnford in that portion of the work which deals with the military conduct of the war. While it was desirable that a record of military events should be made by one whose professional knowledge qualified him for the duty, there was an additional reason which made his help appropriate. It may easily be understood from his name that the interest taken by him in his task would be of no ordinary kind. Colonel Durnford has written the military portions of the book, but is not responsible for any expressions of opinion upon matters strictly political. I am far from feeling that I am the best person to undertake such a work as this, which my father himself would look upon as a serious one, and which he, or even my sister, who has worked with him throughout, would do so much better than I; but they were not at hand, and I have thought it my duty to do what I could, while I could have had no better aid than that given me by Colonel Durnford. However insufficient the result may prove, we shall at least hope that our work may give some slight assistance to that cause of justice, truth, and mercy, the maintenance of which alone can ensure the true honour of the British name.
