Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Alphabet IF this little book does not supply a want, it fills, however imperfectly, a gap; for the only work in the English language on the subject Canon Isaac Taylor's History of the Alphabet - is necessarily charged with a mass of techni cal detail which is stifl' reading even for the student of graphiology. Moreover, invaluable and indispensable as is that work, it furnishes only a meagre account of those primitive stages of the art of writing, knowledge of which is essential for tracing the development of that art, so that its place in the general evolution of human inventions is made clear. Prominence is therefore given to this branch of the subject in the following pages. In the recent reprint of Canon Taylor's book no reference occurs to the important materials collected by Professor Flinders Petrie and Mr. Arthur j. Evans in Egypt and Crete, the result of which is to revolutionise the old theory of the source of the Alphabet whence our own and others are derived. This opens up a big ques tion for experts to settle; and here it must sufiice to present a statement of the new evi dence, and to point out its significance, so that the reader be not taken into the troubled atmosphere of controversy. That he may, further, not be distracted by footnotes, references to the authorities cited are printed in the text. Book Description
Excerpt from The Formation of the Alphabet The point of view here presented is not that Of a systematic alphabet, invented by some single tribe or individual in a developed civilisation. On the contrary it appears that a wide body of Signs had been gradually brought into use in primitive times for various purposes. These were interchanged by trade, and spread from land to land, until the less known and less useful signs were ousted by those in more general acceptance. Lastly a couple of dozen Signs triumphed; these became common property to a group of trading communities, while the local survivals Of other forms were gradually extinguished in isolated seclusion. Book Description
Excerpt from An Alphabet of History: The Words Alexander the Great was a victim of fate, And he sighed there was naught to delight him When he brandished his sword and defiantly roared And could not get a country to fight him. All the armies he'd chased, all the lands laid to waste, And he clamored for further diversions; And our history speaks of his grip on the Greeks And his hammerlock hold on the Persians. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ancient Ones of the Earth: Being the History of the Primitive Alphabet The author feels that the apparent abstruseness Of the subject may have the effect of repelling many readers who take up the book merely to glance through it; but even such readers would find, he hopes, on a little closer examination, that the whole book is quite intelligible to any person Of average information. The abstruseness lies rather in the form than in the subject-matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
"Though there are many books about the history of the alphabet, virtually none address how that history came to be. In Inventing the Alphabet, Johanna Drucker guides readers from antiquity to the present to show how humans have shaped and reshaped their own understanding of this transformative writing tool. From ancient beliefs in the alphabet as a divine gift to growing awareness of its empirical origins through the study of scripts and inscriptions, Drucker describes the frameworks-classical, textual, biblical, graphical, antiquarian, archaeological, paleographic, and political-within which the alphabet's history has been and continues to be constructed. Drucker's book begins in ancient Greece, with the earliest writings on the alphabet's origins. She then explores biblical sources on the topic and medieval preoccupations with the magical properties of individual letters. She later delves into the development of modern archaeological and paleographic tools, and she concludes with the role of alphabetic characters in the digital era. Throughout, she argues that, as a shared form of knowledge technology integrated into every aspect of our lives, the alphabet performs complex cultural, ideological, and technical functions, and her carefully curated selection of images demonstrates how closely the letters we use today still resemble their original appearance millennia ago"--
