Book Description
In imperial China, people moved away from the gender they were assigned at birth in different ways and for many reasons. Eunuchs, boy actresses, and clergy left behind normative gender roles defined by family and procreation. “Stone maidens”—women deemed physically incapable of vaginal intercourse—might depart from families or marriages to become Buddhist or Daoist nuns. Anatomical males who presented as women sometimes took a conventionally female occupation such as midwife, faith healer, or even medium to a fox spirit. Yet they were often punished harshly for the crime of “masquerading in women’s attire,” suspected of sexual predation, even when they had lived peacefully in their communities for many years. Exploring these histories and many more, this book is a groundbreaking study of transgender lives and practices in late imperial China. Through close readings of court cases, as well as Ming and Qing fiction and nineteenth-century newspaper accounts, Matthew H. Sommer examines the social, legal, and cultural histories of gender crossing. He considers a range of transgender experiences, illuminating how certain forms of gender transgression were sanctioned in particular social contexts and penalized in others. Sommer scrutinizes the ways Qing legal authorities and literati writers represented and understood gender-nonconforming people and practices, contrasting official ideology with popular mentalities. An unprecedented account of China’s transgender histories, this book also sheds new light on a range of themes in Ming and Qing law, religion, medicine, literature, and culture.

Each story is filled with enchanting characters, magical settings, and timeless themes that continue to resonate with readers of all ages. In "The Ice Maiden," the titular character is a mysterious and alluring figure who lives in the icy heart of the mountains. As he becomes entangled in her spell, he must face a series of trials and challenges to break free from her grip. The tale explores themes of love, courage, and the power of human will. "The Little Match Girl" is a poignant and heart-wrenching story of a poor young girl who sells matches on the streets during a bitterly cold New Year's Eve. With each match she lights, she glimpses beautiful visions of warmth and comfort, providing her temporary solace from her harsh reality. This touching tale reminds readers of the importance of empathy and compassion for those less fortunate. "The Emperor's New Clothes" is a delightful and humorous tale that satirizes vanity and the desire for external validation. In this story, two clever weavers convince a vain emperor that they have created a suit of clothes that can only be seen by those who are wise and worthy. The emperor, eager to prove his intelligence, pretends to see the non-existent clothes, until a child's innocent honesty exposes the truth. Other enchanting tales in the collection include "The Little Mermaid," "The Nightingale," "The Princess and the Pea," and "The Ugly Duckling." Each story explores universal themes of love, transformation, self-discovery, and the complexities of human emotions. Hans Christian Andersen's storytelling prowess shines in this collection, as he weaves moral lessons and profound insights into imaginative and whimsical narratives. His vivid descriptions of fantastical worlds and compelling characters transport readers to magical realms where dreams and reality intertwine. "The Ice Maiden and Other Tales" continues to captivate audiences worldwide, inspiring numerous adaptations in literature, theater, and film. Andersen's ability to touch the hearts and minds of readers through his timeless tales solidifies his place as one of the most celebrated and beloved storytellers in literary history."

Book Description
"With the grace & delicacy of a courtesan's silk fan, this collection of folklore from Samoa unfolds to reveal a world steeped in mystery & sudden wisdom. A bat loses its wings to a flattering rat, an octopus' act of kindness brings it unwanted spots, a giant carries a thankless man across the sea & in the title story, THE STONE MAIDEN, a crab retrieves a family's bewitched daughter. The stories are briskly & skillfully told, entrancing the reader with their colorful characters. Fables reverberate in the captivating illustrations of award winning artist, Michael Evanston & a brief moral serves as a coda to each narrative. The result is a delightful book that like the sorcerers found in many of the fables, swiftly & completely enchants young readers as well as adults."--Tom Moran, Author. "One encounters in these tales not merely the usual themes of tasty revenge, punishment of greed & selfishness, & the comeuppance of those who are haughty beyond what is called for by their station, but new kinds of situations which arise in the contemporary Samoan world."--Martin Orans, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, U.C. Riverside.

Book Description
No. I . 'SANTA CLAUS' Nobody knew where Teddy Pegram came from or why the man ordained to settle down in Little Silver. He had no relations round about and couldn't, or wouldn't, tell his new neighbours what had brought him along. But he bided a bit with Mrs. Ford, the policeman's wife, as a lodger, and then, when he'd sized up the place and found it suited him, he took a tumble-down, four-room cottage at the back-side of the village and worked upon it himself and soon had the place to his liking. A most handy little man he was and could turn his skill in many directions. And he'd do odd jobs for the neighbours and show a good bit of kindness to the children. He lived alone and looked after himself, for he could cook and sew like a woman—at least like the clever ones. In fact there didn't seem nothing he couldn't do. And his knowledge extended above crafts, for he'd got a bit of learning also and he'd talk with Johns at the shop-of-all-sorts about business, or with Samual Mutters, the chemist, about patent medicines, or with butcher or baker concerning their jobs, or with policemen about crime, and be worth attending to on any subject. His pleasure, however, was sporting, and not until he'd dwelt among us a good bit did a measure of doubt in that matter creep into our praise of the man.
