Excerpt from The Sign of the Cross in Madagascar IN 1895 when the London Missionary Society of England was celebrating the centenary of its existence and work, I was laboring as pastor of one of the churches formed by missionaries of that society in the island of Jamaica, West ln dies. In connection with our local celebration of the event, it fell to my lot to be appointed a deputa tion to visit all the Congregational churches in the island, and lecture on the hundred years' work. To me, personally, the task was a most pleasant one, since, through my father and a great many personal friends, I was related to the mis sion field; and had for many years tried to keep myself in touch with the progress of the Kingdom of Christ in the world. Excerpt from The Sign of the Cross And the more so, because great actors and good men said it was impossible, for the English playgoer was best caught with broad pieces and the things which he would condemn in the real life of his own home. Many a tragedian preferred the things that make for good, but their audience seemed of another mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sign of the Cross in the Nineteenth Century If they were confronted with Satan, the king and god of that age; if they lived in the midst of a world that was not Christian, that wished not to become such, that wished no one to be such, that persecuted those who continued to be such - are not we confronted with Satan, who, unchained on the earth, is inciting nations to rebel against Jesus Christ, and making them cry out incessantly: We will not have Him reign any longer over us? And amidst what do the Christians of our day live? Are they not surrounded by a world that is ceasing to be Christian; that does not wish to return to Christianity, that does not wish others to belong to it, that persecutes in every possible way those who persist in doing so? Excerpt from The Sign of the Cross in the Western Liturgies IT has been the writer's endeavour, in the following pages, to consider some of the more important features which disclose themselves upon an examination of the use of the Sign of the Cross 1n the Western Liturgies, and especially m the canon of the mass. No attempt has been made at anything like a complete account of this ceremony. To do so would obviously have been quite beyond the scope of an Alcuin Club tract. Book Description
The cross stirs intense feelings among Christians as well as non-Christians. Robin Jensen takes readers on an intellectual and spiritual journey through the two-thousand-year evolution of the cross as an idea and an artifact, illuminating the controversies—along with the forms of devotion—this central symbol of Christianity inspires. Jesus’s death on the cross posed a dilemma for Saint Paul and the early Church fathers. Crucifixion was a humiliating form of execution reserved for slaves and criminals. How could their messiah and savior have been subjected to such an ignominious death? Wrestling with this paradox, they reimagined the cross as a triumphant expression of Christ’s sacrificial love and miraculous resurrection. Over time, the symbol’s transformation raised myriad doctrinal questions, particularly about the crucifix—the cross with the figure of Christ—and whether it should emphasize Jesus’s suffering or his glorification. How should Jesus’s body be depicted: alive or dead, naked or dressed? Should it be shown at all? Jensen’s wide-ranging study focuses on the cross in painting and literature, the quest for the “true cross” in Jerusalem, and the symbol’s role in conflicts from the Crusades to wars of colonial conquest. The Cross also reveals how Jews and Muslims viewed the most sacred of all Christian emblems and explains its role in public life in the West today.
