Book Description
ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRANSLATION The Academy of Military Sciences of the People's Liberation Army of China issued a revised edition of its "The Science of Military Strategy" (SMS) in 2013. A Chinese-language copy was obtained by Secrecy News but I have not found an English language copy, so I decided to translate it into English myself. I am not a scholar of the Chinese language, but hopefully you will excuse my illiteracy as this is the only English version available. I believe the translation is faithful to the original, however I have taken some poetic license in order to improve the readability. Some of the colloquial expressions such as "two legged losers" (page 210) and use of a "private white hair to attack and defend the network" (page 196) went completely over my head, so I didn't make any attempt to edit them. I decided to limit the translated text on any given page in the original text to the same numbered page in this book. So, if you are unsure of the meaning of some of my edits - and, you happen to be a Chinese scholar - you will know what page to look for in the original Chinese edition. I must apologize because unfortunately, some text and sometimes complete pages of the copy I obtained were not legible, making accurate translation impossible. Where this occurs, I left that area blank so as to highlight that something is missing and added the word "Unintelligible". At the last minute I decided to also include the text of "China's Military Strategy" that was released by the State Council Information Office of the People's Republic of China in 2015. You will find that at the end of this book. It provides additional context to the 2013 document and should further clarify some of the meaning. Speaking about the Chinese language version of this book and the Science of Campaigns (2006), a team of authors from RAND Corporation who worked on a 2015 report stated: "To the best of our knowledge, these are the most authoritative publicly available sources on Chinese military thinking about the campaign level of warfare."

Book Description
Roughly once every generation, a powerful, highly influential organization within the Chinese People's Liberation Army releases a new edition of the Science of Military Strategy (SMS), a comprehensive and authoritative study which details the strategic approach that the Chinese military will take in the coming years in response to the threats and challenges facing China. The recent release of a new edition of SMS signals the potential for dramatic shifts in the PLA's approach to a number of strategic questions, but the book remains underutilized by many Western China analysts due to the lack of both an English translation and expert analysis to place these changes into context. China's Evolving Military Strategy aims to bring knowledge of these important developments to a mass audience of China watchers, policymakers, and the broader foreign policy community by providing a sector-by-sector analysis of changes in the PLA's thinking and approach from the previous edition of SMS to the present. Each chapter addresses the implications for a different portion of the Chinese military, ranging from the air, sea, and space domains to cyberspace and electromagnetic warfare, and each is written by one of the world's foremost experts on that subsection of China's military development. China's Evolving Military Strategy will serve as the cornerstone reference for a generation to come on one of China's most important declarations of its military-strategic goals and intentions.

Book Description
"The Science of Strategy is an academic brand that our Academy has persisted in crafting for a long time; regardless of it being the 1987 edition or the 2001 edition, both have produced an extensive academic effect on the military and the nation, domestically and internationally. With the previous versions of Science of Strategy as a foundation, the new edition of Science of Strategy does not rely on the stylistic content of the previous two editions, and it does not think grandiosely or attend to every detail; it tightly seizes on the major strategic issues of the new phase of the new century that are related to PLA building and application; it carries out the spirit of the Party's Central Committee and the Central Military Committee's [CMC] instructions on forcefully pushing forward strategic theory innovation and strengthening military strategic guidance by keeping up with the times; it gives prominence to the main themes of military strategy, especially in local war strategic guidance under informationized conditions, as well as the problem of peacetime military strength application; and it strives to systematically summarize and innovate new military strategic theory so as to even better serve new military practices...Compared with the Academy's previous two editions of Science of Strategy, the new edition of Science of Strategy conforms to the developing changes in world, nation and military situations, while adding some new content blocks, for example: the strategic operations research-based planning and guidance of peacetime military strength application; the strategic operations research-based planning and guidance of military struggle in the major domains of nuclear, space, and cyber; service strategy and theater strategy; strategic space and strategic layout; and the operations research-based planning and guidance of military strength tixi system building with Chinese characteristics; etc. The new edition of Science of Strategy attaches importance to carrying 'science' with 'theory,' and it diligently conforms to China's strategic circumstance, the PLA's historical mission, and the new developments and new requirements of the form-state of war. It centers on building a consolidated national defense and formidable armed forces that corresponds to China's international position and conforms to national security and development interests {fazhan liyi}. It achieves the strategic objective of a strong nation and a strong military, and it tightly seizes on the major issues related to current and future PLA building and application. It conducts forward-looking consideration, study and operations research-based planning, and it strives to become a strategic theoretical work that blends epochal quality, focused quality and innovative quality into one."--Preface.

Through extensive primary source analysis and independent analysis, this report seeks to answer a number of important questions regarding the state of China’s armed forces. The authors found that the PLA is keenly aware of its many weaknesses and is vigorously striving to correct them. Although it is only natural to focus on the PLA’s growing capabilities, understanding the PLA’s weaknesses—and its self-assessments—is no less important.

Book Description
Selected as a Financial Times Best Book of 2013 In Strategy: A History, Sir Lawrence Freedman, one of the world's leading authorities on war and international politics, captures the vast history of strategic thinking, in a consistently engaging and insightful account of how strategy came to pervade every aspect of our lives. The range of Freedman's narrative is extraordinary, moving from the surprisingly advanced strategy practiced in primate groups, to the opposing strategies of Achilles and Odysseus in The Iliad, the strategic advice of Sun Tzu and Machiavelli, the great military innovations of Baron Henri de Jomini and Carl von Clausewitz, the grounding of revolutionary strategy in class struggles by Marx, the insights into corporate strategy found in Peter Drucker and Alfred Sloan, and the contributions of the leading social scientists working on strategy today. The core issue at the heart of strategy, the author notes, is whether it is possible to manipulate and shape our environment rather than simply become the victim of forces beyond one's control. Time and again, Freedman demonstrates that the inherent unpredictability of this environment-subject to chance events, the efforts of opponents, the missteps of friends-provides strategy with its challenge and its drama. Armies or corporations or nations rarely move from one predictable state of affairs to another, but instead feel their way through a series of states, each one not quite what was anticipated, requiring a reappraisal of the original strategy, including its ultimate objective. Thus the picture of strategy that emerges in this book is one that is fluid and flexible, governed by the starting point, not the end point. A brilliant overview of the most prominent strategic theories in history, from David's use of deception against Goliath, to the modern use of game theory in economics, this masterful volume sums up a lifetime of reflection on strategy.

Book Description
John Boyd is often known exclusively for the so-called ‘OODA’ loop model he developed. This model refers to a decision-making process and to the idea that military victory goes to the side that can complete the cycle from observation to action the fastest. This book aims to redress this state of affairs and re-examines John Boyd’s original contribution to strategic theory. By highlighting diverse sources that shaped Boyd’s thinking, and by offering a comprehensive overview of Boyd’s work, this volume demonstrates that the common interpretation of the meaning of Boyd’s OODA loop concept is incomplete. It also shows that Boyd’s work is much more comprehensive, richer and deeper than is generally thought. With his ideas featuring in the literature on Network Centric Warfare, a key element of the US and NATO’s so-called ‘military transformation’ programmes, as well as in the debate on Fourth Generation Warfare, Boyd continues to exert a strong influence on Western military thinking. Dr Osinga demonstrates how Boyd’s work can helps us to understand the new strategic threats in the post- 9/11 world, and establishes why John Boyd should be regarded as one of the most important (post)modern strategic theorists.

Book Description
Drawing on Chinese military writings, this report finds that China’s strategic-deterrence concepts are evolving in response to Beijing’s changing assessment of its external security environment and a growing emphasis on protecting its emerging interests in space and cyberspace. China also is rapidly closing what was once a substantial gap between the People’s Liberation Army’s strategic weapons capabilities and its strategic-deterrence concepts.

Book Description
What changes in China's modern military policy reveal about military organizations and strategySince the 1949 Communist Revolution, China has devised nine different military strategies, which the People's Liberation Army (PLA) calls "strategic guidelines." What accounts for these numerous changes? Active Defense offers the first systematic look at China's military strategy from the mid-twentieth century to today. Exploring the range and intensity of threats that China has faced, M. Taylor Fravel illuminates the nation's past and present military goals and how China sought to achieve them, and offers a rich set of cases for deepening the study of change in military organizations.Drawing from diverse Chinese-language sources, including memoirs of leading generals, military histories, and document collections that have become available only in the last two decades, Fravel shows why transformations in military strategy were pursued at certain times and not others. He focuses on the military strategies adopted in 1956, 1980, and 1993-when the PLA was attempting to wage war in a new kind of way-to show that China has pursued major change in its strategic guidelines when there has been a significant shift in the conduct of warfare in the international system and when China's Communist Party has been united.Delving into the security threats China has faced over the last seven decades, Active Defense offers a detailed investigation into how and why states alter their defense policies.
