The Handwriting of the Kings Queens of England (Classic Reprint)
Author: W. J. Hardy
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781332531233
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
Excerpt from The Handwriting of the Kings Queens of England The greater part of this work appeared in the pages of the Leisure Hour during the years 1889 and 1891, but some of the most interesting examples of royal penmanship, here figured, have not before been made public: indeed, their existence was unknown until recently, when they were discovered, amongst some uncalendared documents at the Public Record Office, by Mr. H. C. Maxwell Lyte, C. B., the present Deputy-Keeper of the Records, by whose kindness, in pointing them out to me, and in giving me permission to have photographs taken of them, I am enabled to include them here. These new discoveries include some words written by Richard II; a letter wholly in the handwriting of Henry IV; a curious form of the signature of Henry VI, which shows that he used a wood-block stamp with his name upon it; and a long sentence penned by Edward IV of whose writing no example, except the ordinary 'E. R., ' was known to exist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters of the Kings of England, Vol. 1
Author: James Orchard Halliwell
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330778920
Category : History

Pages : 456
Book Description
Excerpt from Letters of the Kings of England, Vol. 1: Now First Collected From the Originals Now Royal Archives, and From Other Authentic Sources, Private as Well as Public; Edited With an Historical Introduction and Notes An intimate acquaintance with the subject is by no means widely diffused; and, as it cannot be considered foreign to the purpose of a work Of this nature to enter brie y into the probable causes of this deficiency, which appears somewhat paradoxical in an age when the progress of educational knowledge of every kind is boasted of as a proof of our gigantic advance in civilization, we may perhaps be permitted to preface a Collection of Letters of the Kings of England by a few general observations with reference to this point; not considering it in any way necessary to enlarge on the vast importance of the study which these volumes are intended to illustrate, nor to expatiate on the manner in which that object has been attempted to be accomplished.
