John Ross was born in about 1695 in Scotland. He was a soldier in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and was transported to America in 1716. He married Sarah and they had ten children. He died in 1759 in Hanover County, Virginia. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Alabama.

This first full-scale biography of Ross reveals his importance in the history of the United States. He was involved in the abolitionist movement as both a journalist and a participant, as well as in the struggle to bring Kansas into the union as a free state. In short, Ross’s career represents the changes that the whole country experienced in the course of his lifetime.
