The streets of Roman cities have received surprisingly little attention until recently. Traditionally the main interest archaeologists and classicists had in streets was in tracing the origins and development of the orthogonal layout used in Roman colonial cities. Roman Urban Street Networks is the first volume to sift through the ancient literature to determine how authors used the Latin vocabulary for streets, and determine what that tells us about how the Romans perceived their streets. Author Alan Kaiser offers a methodology for describing the role of a street within the broader urban transportation network in such a way that one can compare both individual streets and street networks from one site to another. This work is more than simply an exploration of Roman urban streets, however. It addresses one of the central problems in current scholarship on Roman urbanism: Kaiser suggests that streets provided the organizing principle for ancient Roman cities, offering an exciting new way of describing and comparing Roman street networks. Streetscapes are part of the taken-for-granted spaces of everyday urban life, yet they are also contested arenas in which struggles over identity, memory, and place shape the social production of urban space. This book examines the role that street naming has played in the political life of urban streetscapes in both historical and contemporary cities. The renaming of streets and remaking of urban commemorative landscapes have long been key strategies that different political regimes have employed to legitimize spatial assertions of sovereign authority, ideological hegemony, and symbolic power. Spurred on by a knee interest in street activity, the research field of this thesis is a multidisciplinary junction, examining social interactions on the street and various art movements with particular emphasis on environmental theatre. Why are some streets alive while others are not? The observed problem or situation for the modernist urban planner is occasionally this: a street is studied as if were a mathematical formula; planners tend to reduce observations at the social level. People bring the street to life. The street is a stage or platform for the public to go about their daily routines. This thesis intends to research environmental theatre in order to find types of streets that are social streets, streets of the people or a street of its inhabitants. The aim is to explore another notion for the street; a street with social interaction. Without these transactions, urban life would be practically non-existent. This aim is applicable, is achievable—and is measurable—through Schechners Six Axioms. This is a descriptive research; it observes the daily happenings on a street to identify traces of Schechnerss Six Axioms for environmental theatre. The hypothesis herein states that if a street greatly encompasses the Six Axioms for environmental theatre, then that street trends to be an environmental theatre, and consequently, a street that has urban life. Downtown Beirut will be the geographical framework of the streets selected for this study. Following a comprehensive research of these streets, it appears that Schechners Axioms flourish when streets are genuine and fade when streets are more rigid. The street, through environmental theatre, could be a stage through its inhabitants interactions, through its different sceneries, through its found spaces, through its multiple focus and through all the street elements that stand on their own, becoming their own character.

The colonnaded axes define the visitor's experience of many of the great cities of the Roman East. How did this extraordinarily bold tool of urban planning evolve? The street, instead of remaining a mundane passage, a convenient means of passing from one place to another, was in the course of little more than a century transformed in the Eastern provinces into a monumental landscape which could in one sweeping vision encompass the entire city. The colonnaded axes became the touchstone by which cities competed for status in the Eastern Empire. Though adopted as a sign of cities' prosperity under the Pax Romana, they were not particularly 'Roman' in their origin. Rather, they reflected the inventiveness, fertility of ideas and the dynamic role of civic patronage in the Eastern provinces in the first two centuries under Rome. This study will concentrate on the convergence of ideas behind these great avenues, examining over fifty sites in an attempt to work out the sequence in which ideas developed across a variety of regions-from North Africa around to Asia Minor. It will look at the phenomenon in the context of the consolidation of Roman rule.
