Book Description
The uses of radioactive isotopes in medical research can be conveniently divided into three principal categories; namely, the applications as tracers for the study of metabolic phenomena, as diagnostic aids in clinical medicine, and finally their role in therapy. Frequently radioisotopes available from the chain-reacting pile do not have a sufficient degree of specific activity for satisfactory use. A number of radioisotopes which can be produced with high specific activity in the pile possess half-lives too short to be of any practical value. Then, there are a few cases in which the desired radioisotope may be made in the pile with high specific activity, but concomitantly there is formed another radioisotope of the same element whose half-life is of such duration as to render its use hazardous in man. Finally, there are several elements of biological and medical interest whose radioactive isotopes can be produced only by the cyclotron.

Book Description
*****Particle accelerators, such as cyclotrons have been achieved growing importance in medical science because of an enlarged area of application concerning the production of short-lived radioisotopes as well as the application for hadron-therapy.This huge spectrum of applications would never have been available without constantly improving the performance of these machines.A big step up the ladder was development of the strong focusing principle allowing much higher beam energies of particles with higher mass. This master thesis contains a description of the physical principles of a cyclotron as well as the mathematical description of the particle dynamics. The WinAGILE beam transport code was used, to demonstrate the theory of weak and strong focusing on the basis of some simulations of beam dynamics.Different types of cyclotrons and their application in medical science were treated. Finally the latest trends and designs of cyclotrons and their application are showing a possible vision of the future.

Book Description
A two year design study has been completed for medical ion accelerators with beams of sufficient range and intensity for therapy. The particles of main interest were ions between carbon and neon, but the generation of proton and neutron beams was studied also. Cyclotrons appear to be good injectors for a heavy ion medical synchrotron, particularly if neutron and/or isotope production is desired as well. They also offer a competitive solution for proton beams of 250 MeV. A superconducting cyclotron design for 380 MeV/u carbon was worked out, but a synchrotron for heavy ion beams of 400 to 600 MeV/u and 5 x 109 particles/sec was found to be more economical and flexible.
