In 1598, at the height of the Spanish Inquisition, New Mexico became Spain’s northernmost New World colony. The censures of the Catholic Church reached all the way to Santa Fe, where in the mid-1660s, Doña Teresa Aguilera y Roche, the wife of New Mexico governor Bernardo López de Mendizábal, came under the Inquisition’s scrutiny. She and her husband were tried in Mexico City for the crime of judaizante, the practice of Jewish rituals. Using the handwritten briefs that Doña Teresa prepared for her defense, as well as depositions by servants, ethnohistorian Frances Levine paints a remarkable portrait of daily life in seventeenth-century New Mexico. Doña Teresa Confronts the Spanish Inquisition also offers a rare glimpse into the intellectual and emotional life of an educated European woman at a particularly dangerous time in Spanish colonial history. In Pueblos, Plains, and Province Joseph P. Sánchez offers an in-depth examination of sociopolitical conflict in seventeenth-century New Mexico, detailing the effects of Spanish colonial policies on settlers’, missionaries’, and Indigenous peoples’ struggle for economic and cultural control of the region. Sánchez explores the rich archival documentation that provides cultural, linguistic, and legal views of the values of the period. Spanish dual Indian policies for Pueblo and Plains tribes challenged Indigenous political and social systems to conform to the imperial structure for pacification purposes. Meanwhile, missionary efforts to supplant Indigenous religious beliefs with a Christian worldview resulted, in part, in a syncretism of the two worlds. Indigenous resentment of these policies reflected the contentious disagreements between Spanish clergymen and civil authorities, who feuded over Indigenous labor, and encroachment on tribal sovereignties with demands for sworn loyalty to Spanish governance. The little-studied “starvation period” adversely affected Spanish-Pueblo relationships for the remainder of the century and contributed significantly to the battle at Acoma, the Jumano War, and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. For most modern day citizens of Albuquerque, Martineztown has always been a mysterious place. The histories of Albuquerque and large land grants that occupied the valley from Bernalillo to Isleta have long overshadowed the role of Martineztown in the development of the city. For nearly 100 years, from 1850-1950, Martineztown was at its zenith as a desireable place to invest. Historically, little is known about Martineztown, save for a few reports in which brief histories of Martineztown are covered in a few paragraphs. The present study adds new historical perspectives of Martineztown by emphasizing, not its rich cultural history, but land tenure patterns that emerged from 1850 to 1950. In the 1960s, Martineztown suffered through urban renewal and emerged as a checkerboarded area that is largely zoned as both commercial and residential. The history of land tenure in Martineztown follows a predictable pattern from 1850 to 1950. Today, Martineztown is a place where old stigmas have disappeared but have not been forgotten. It is a place that represents diversity, more than any other part of Albuquerque. It is a place with a historical past that must be remembered and celebrated. This book is for those who wish to know about the origins of Martineztown and its historic significance to the history and heritage of Albuquerque.
