The global crisis has had virtually no impact on Algeria’s financial system, which remains stable overall but thoroughly underdeveloped. Pervasive exchange controls, widespread public ownership, and an abundance of domestic funding have protected banks from external shocks. Financial sector reforms have been pushed to the backburner by the emergence of global financial and regional political turmoil, with privatization of banks halted and consumer lending suspended. The authorities have also made progress in a number of areas implementing the recommendations of the 2007 Financial Sector Assessment Program update.

Considerable oil and gas revenues have provided the Algerian government with sufficient funds to embark on generous public spending programmes in nearly all sectors, leading to improvements in many of the country’s headline indicators. Although hydrocarbons are likely to remain the backbone of the economy for the foreseeable future, with significant state involvement, efforts are being made to diversify the economy and support private sector growth. Since the country gained independence more than 50 years ago, Algeria’s economy has evolved significantly, with oil and gas production reinforcing high levels of state spending. Algeria has been following something of a contrary approach to much of the rest of the world over the past few years. Even as the global economy has struggled, Algeria has continued to sail along fairly smoothly. It has not seen the vertiginous growth rates of emerging markets elsewhere in the Middle East and Africa, but it has seen a steady increase in activity and, through prudential management, has built up its financial reserves to great effect. In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Diet and nutrition are critical to health, well-being and longevity. The economic and health burdens associated with poor quality diets are a worldwide concern, but for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the long-term impact of these burdens has the potential to be especially devastating. Many of these LMICs are currently grappling with the deepening multiple burdens of malnutrition, with undernutrition, nutrient inadequacies, and overweight and obesity often presenting simultaneously in communities, households and even in single individuals. Time-relevant data is a necessary and critical component of any process or initiative that aims to ensure healthy diets. Robust data on what people eat in a country enables an understanding of current food consumption practices, and provides an evidence-based foundation for the design and implementation of targeted and well informed actions, policies and messaging to address the key issues related to healthy eating.The purpose of this report is to take stock and celebrate the collection and use of dietary data in LMICs, and generate further momentum for investment in government-led dietary surveys in LMICs. Section 1 provides a global overview of dietary surveys carried out in LMICs from 1980 through 2019, analysing key characteristics and trends over time. Section 2 celebrates the increased investment in dietary surveys in LMICs by highlighting country stories related to dietary survey initiation, implementation and data use. Section 3 is aimed at generating further momentum for investment in government-led dietary surveys in LMICs by illustrating, through data visualizations, the type of information dietary data can provide for policy makers.
