Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Researchers have extensively studied the effects of placement on academic and behavioral interventions for students with disabilities and have found varying results. A correlational research design was used to determine if there was a relationship between the level of special education support (amount of time spent with special education support) for students with emotional behavior disorders (EBD) and student achievement in reading and math as measured by performance on the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). The study included 81 students with EBD in a small rural school district in Georgia in grades six through eight over the 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010 school years. The results of this study indicated that there is little relationship between the level of special education instructional support and the academic achievement in reading and math of students with EBD. Findings showed that student mean math scale scores were below the acceptable range of proficiency in all three-grade levels. Recommendations for practical application and future research were included.

The purpose of this study was to investigate self-advocacy skills and academic supports, which influence academic persistence for students with psychiatric disabilities. Self-advocacy skills are important for students with non psychiatric disabilities in postsecondary education and for students in secondary education; however, researchers have not evidenced how students with psychiatric disabilities negotiate with institutional stakeholders in postsecondary institutions to acquire needed support. Brinckerhoff's theory provided a theoretical foundation for exploring self-advocacy. The study was conducted in a 2 year, postsecondary institution. Using theoretical sampling, 10 students diagnosed with a psychiatric disability served as participants in this study and discussed their experiences attending college with a psychiatric disability, the self-advocacy skills they employed to persist, and the academic support systems that they perceived has contributed to their academic achievement. Using grounded theory methods (open, axial, and selective coding), themes of self-knowledge, communication, knowledge of disability rights, building intentional relationships, faculty support, disability resource center advocacy, controlling the test environment, and campus-based mental health services were identified. The social change implication spawning from this investigation are that students with psychiatric disabilities can achieve, academically, and often contribute to their institutions and the community beyond their role as a student. This research provides important insight to students, educators, and policymakers as to how students with psychiatric disabilities obtain academic accommodations and supports in an educational environment, which poses barriers to their academic success.
