The key manuscript witness of this monastery’s Bible-making enterprise is the Codex Amiatinus, a massive illustrated volume sent toward Rome in June 716, as a gift to St. Peter. Amiatinus is the oldest extant, largely intact Latin full Bible. A comparison of the message of Acts transmitted by Codez Bezae with that of the more familiar Alexandrian text, represented by Codex Vaticanus. For each section of Acts, there is a side by side translation of the Bezan and Alexandrian manuscripts, followed by a critical apparatus and, finally, a commentary that explores the differences in the message of the two texts. It is concluded that the Bezan text, with its interest in internal Jewish affairs and its focus on the struggles of the early disciples to free themselves from their traditional Jewish expectations and to achieve, despite their mistakes, a more accurate understanding of their master's teaching, is the earlier of the two texts. In Scribal Habits in Sixth-Century Greek Purple Codices, Elijah Hixson assesses the extent to which unique readings reveal the tendencies of the scribes who produced three luxury manuscripts of Matthew’s Gospel. The manuscripts, Codex Purpureus Petropolitanus (N 022), Codex Sinopensis (O 023) and Codex Rossanensis (Σ 042), were each copied in the sixth century from the same exemplar. Hixson compares the results of a modified singular readings method to the number of actual changes each scribe made. An edition of the lost exemplar and transcriptions of Matthew in each manuscript follow in the appendices. Of particular relevance to New Testament textual criticism is the observation that the singular readings method does not accurately reveal the habits of these three scribes.

A group of biblical and patristic scholars and palaeographers met in Lunel, Herault, in June 1995 to discuss the many questions posed by Codex Bezae to our understanding of the use of the Gospels and Acts in early Christianity, and of the text of the New Testament. This collection makes the papers and debates of the colloquium available for a wider discussion. The papers cover two broad areas. The first addresses palaeographical questions. The second covers textual matters, subdivided between the Gospels and Acts. The 24 contributors include J.N. Birdsall, J. Irigoin, L. Holtz, B.D. Ehrman, M.W. Holmes, J.K. Elliott, J.M. Auwers and M.-É. Boismard. There is an introduction by the editors, who also provide analyses of each main section. The range of interests represented by the participants and by the papers has already stimulated fresh developments.
