The purpose of the present study was to investigate ways in which single parented and two parented children differ in their perception of control over their environment and also the extent to which this perception might be related to the school performance of single parented and two parented children. Locus of control was assessed using the Bialer- Cromwell locus of control scale (Bialer-Cromwell, 1961) and academic performance was assessed using the National Foundation for Educational Research Reading Test and the Basic Number Skills Test. 172 students, 68 males and 58 females from two parent families, and 23 males and 23 females from one parent families, aged (7.6 to 9.3 years) in three selected Bradford first schools were employed. In a subsequent study designed solely to test reliability of the locus of control scale 57 students aged (10-13 years), 23 boys and 34 girls in a Bradford middle school were also used. Although statistically significant differences were found between children from one and two parented families in reading and mathematics no conclusions could be reached regarding differences in locus of control. For reasons which remain unclear the Bialer-Cromwell test of locus of control proved to be unreliable....

This study was conducted to determine whether or not there were differences in achievement between males and females across three grade levels in a sample of low-income African-American students. Grade level and gender differences in locus of control orientation were also explored. The results failed to show a significant relationship between locus of control and academic achievement in this sample of middle school students. In addition, no main effects for grade level were found for achievement or locus of control orientation. A main effect was found for gender on academic achievement; however, no significant relationship was found between gender and locus of control.
