Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: October, 1934 The Chesters were Puritans of New England, people of strong bodies, vigorous minds and marked Spiritual gifts. The Chapters dealing with Dr. Chester's early life at Mount Holly, Arkansas, where he was born in 1851, present a vivid picture of the pioneer days in that state when there were few luxuries and life was strenuous; slavery as it existed then is shown at its best; war incidents are related, and the trials of Reconstruction days are referred to in a calm and impartial manner. College life at Washington College (lexington, Vir ginia) is portrayed' and the young student's association with General Robert E. Lee and his family is set forth in a most interesting way. Then hampden-sydney, as it was in the early seventies, receives the attention it deserves. The great worthies of the Seminary faculty are mentioned and just estimates of them are made. To the readers of the record this portion of the book will probably be most interesting. Even Walker Crawley is not forgotten, though the reference to this unique person is brief and not perhaps as laudatory as Walker would have wished it to be. It Should be stated, however, that the names of Hampden Sydney men are found all through the volume; for the contribution of the College to the work of missions has been great, and the Secretary came in contact with many of them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: July, 1915 In fact, the condition of the gift is that the college will make this addition to the building. The library at present contains some thirty thousand volumes and pamphlets, many of. Them being of great value, but the great need is for other books which will supply the material needed for research work. The library is used more and more each year, from the beginning of the session to the close. A visitor during library hours will be astonished to see the great number of students working there. Some are there for the purpose of looking up assignments made by the professors, others for the independent preparation of speeches or articles for the various college publications. Still others use the library more or less as a study hall. Nothing is more greatly needed than better library facilities. One of the reasons which has prevented the college from being on the accredited list of American Universities and Colleges has been due to the fact that these facilities at hampden-sydney have not met the standard required by the Association. The hours which the library will be kept open will also be increased. It is believed that with this addition to the building, and after the purchase of these volumes, made possible by the gift of from the General Education Board, this particular disability will be removed. Nor does he overlook the spanish-american War, though that lasted only a few months. Of course he has a good deal to say about the first World War and World War II, and the Korean conflict. Mr. Bradshaw draws an excellent picture of the social life in the county and he deals also with the political and educational. In the educational field he naturally has a great deal to say about hampden-sydney during its early days, as it pertains to the historical record of the county which he traces from its foundations, down to the present. His treatment of Longwood College is most complete and comprehensive, showing that Prince Edward did not neglect the education of its young women.
