Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 10: July, 1936 Alumni Association at the last Commencement that the alumni undertake the financial responsibility of getting out the decennial alumni catalogue now called for under the plan adopted some years ago, was an excellent one. This is a matter of great importance. The first general catalogue was compiled by Dr. J. H. C. Bagby in 1906. It went back to the first year the College was open. It was a monumental undertaking, but has proved invaluable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 17: January, 1943 The Fund was headed up this year by that loyal and energetic Alumnus, Dr. H. Wallace Blanton, of Richmond, and while much was confidently expected of him, the result surpassed those expectations. Approximately has been secured in cash or pledges coming from about 800 contributors as against something in excess of from 850 contributors last year. The fact that the number of contributors is a little less than that of last year is easily explained in that so many of our younger Alumni are in the armed forces and scattered over both hemispheres and were unable to be reached. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 41: Winter, 1967 The Oldest four-story dormitory still being used in the United States is said to be Cushing Hall at Hamp den-sydney. The building has been an integral part of the college since the 1820's, when it was constructed during the rather important administration of Dr. Jonathan P. Cushing. For many years the tall Georgian brick structure housed almost every activity at the college, and its location atop one of the gentle hills in central Virginia caused students and faculty alike to refer to the campus as The Hill. Today The Hill has actually expanded to hundreds of acres, but Cushing Hall is still perhaps the most prominent landmark in the area. It was in this building one hundred years ago on March 2, 1867, in the room of Lennox B. Tumbull, a junior from Baltimore, Maryland, that the Chi Phi fraternity at Hampden - Sydney had its beginning. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 10: April, 1916 The days of our ancestors were full of action, and even we of the last and near middle twentieth century are thrilled When we read of the history making events in which our colonial forefathers moved. Nevertheless, we could wish that there might be more of tran quillity, less rush, and less haste; and that now and then, at least, there could be restful pauses between acts, as it were, before the curtain rises on another scene.
